I'll try it tomorrow morning. But as I recall, hitting DISP would cycle through the screens (EV/HV ratio, HSI, etc), but that Charge Power screen isn't there, just the "box" that says Charge Complete.

It seems like that screen would only be useful for someone sitting in their car watching it charge. That's only slightly more interesting than watching paint dry :D.

    And all that comes to

100.22 MPGe correct? Still trying to calculate this myself :)

Electricity consumption of 258 Wh/mi (including charger loss) translates to 131 MPGe. Gas consumption is 56.8 MPG.

Using iRun26.2's actual 63% EV and 37% HV ratio:

    (131 MPGe x 0.63) + (56.8 MPG * 0.37) = 103.32 MPGe composite.

If you can compare the kWh displayed value from Charge Power vs. KillaWatt, we can confirm it.

You don't have to wait until the end of the charge. After half an hour or so, we should be able to compare the amounts.

If Charge Power is from the battery level, the number displayed will be lower than KillaWatt. If it is about the same, we can say the Charge Power does include charging loss.

That's not how to combine to estimate MPGe (I made the same mistake before, but someone on PC corrected me and I have corrected my errant ways.).

To Compute MPGe one must take (total_miles) / (total_energy)

    285Wh/mi * 440mi = 113kWr = 3.34 gallon equiv.

Edit: Sagebrush corrected me below.. only 71.7kw (the 285 is only for EV miles)

    440 / (2.58+3.34) = 77 MPGe. (edit: this is wrong, see below!)

You can download a spreadsheet for computations at

    Close, but no cigar.

A harmonic mean should be calculated.

    :nitpick of the day:

Addendum: I see drinnovation beat me to it. So *he* gets the nitpick prize of the day ;)

Right approach, a couple of typos:

    electricity used: 61/.85 = 71.7647 kwh
    petrol(e) used: 2.85 gallons * 33.7 kwh/gallon = 96.045 kwh

    Total miles: 440
    Average (e) kwh a mile = (71.7647+96.045)/440 = 0.381385682

    So... MPG(e) = 33.7/0.381385682 = 88.362
    -------------

Or ... just take the harmonic mean:
    MPG(e) = the inverse of ((1/131)*0.63 + (1/56.8)*0.37)

Thanks for that spreadsheet. I disagree with the numbers you provided. It should be:

    258 Wh/mi * 278 mi (electric miles) = 71.7 kWh = 2.13 gallon equiv

    440 / (2.85 + 2.13) = 88 MPGe

The XPrize MPGe calculator returned 89 MPGe.

Edit: Sagebrush beat me to it.

Can use either.. I used the top (enter fuel) but also need to update the miles (B21) to get the answer.

Unfortunately I used the wrong number of miles (total not EV0) for the wh/mile so my numbers were off.

I am getting 71 MPGe using the second method.

    Column 1
0 CONVERT PHEV MPG AND WH/MI TO MPGe
    1
    2 Miles-Per-Gallon (gasoline) - MPG: 154.0
    3 Watt-Hours (electricity) per mile: 258.0
    4 MPGe: 71.0

Ok, I figured it out. To use the second method:

    MPG - Total Miles divided by gallons = 440 miles / 2.85 gallons = 154 MPG
    Wh/Mi - Wh divided by Total Miles = 71,700 Wh / 440 miles = 163 Wh/mi

    Column 1
0 CONVERT PHEV MPG AND WH/MI TO MPGe
    1
    2 Miles-Per-Gallon (gasoline) - MPG: 154.0
    3 Watt-Hours (electricity) per mile: 163.0
    4 MPGe: 88.6

Ok, I left the car plugged in this morning and got inside to check. When I turned it on, the first screen is the "box" with the text that says something like "Charge Completed". When I hit DISP to cycle through the screens, there is no Charge Power screen. Additionally, the "Charge Completed" screen is now gone (I guess once you've seen it, you dont need to see it again?).

I'll try what USB suggested, let it charge for 30 minutes or so then compare Kill-A-Watt to the Charge Power screen. I'll take pictures (it will be like hunting Bigfoot since no one has ever seen that screen :D). I'll try to get that today when my car starts its afternoon charge.

Just in case anybody else here is a math nerd, wikipedia has a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonic_mean"]nice monograph[/ame] that discusses the harmonic, and contrasts it with an arithmetic mean.

The bottom line practical advice is to use a harmonic when the average of *rates* is wanted.

Upon closer examination, I was mistaken. "CHARGE POWER" is kW, not kWh.

I have my Kill-A-Watt set up at work and charging will start at 11 (just need a bit of juice for lunch). So I'll head out there at 11:30 or so to get a picture of the elusive screen.

I tried to do it yesterday, but the Leaf owner was plugged in and the Kill-A-Watt obstructs access to the lower outlet so she wouldnt have been able to plug in. She's out this morning, so I'll get its good to go.

That makes more sense. Kw has units of power. kwh is a unit of energy. To get charged energy (kwh) you need to integrate power (kw) over the time of charging. It probably close to constant at the beginning then drops down to a lower level to finish charging.

When I first turned on the car, it was showing 0.8, then 0.9, then settled at 1.0kW. I checked the Kill-A-Watt and it was reading 0.46kWh at the time. It should've been charging for almost 20 minutes when I went to check in it.

    Here's a screenshot
