I've done research on changing the inv coolant pump. Mine appears oem. I do need to check/clean the batt fan. Thanks for the welcome.

Quick ? At startup the gas engine always fires up. Normal?

... that lasts for around 50 seconds then the engine shuts off. This assumes you don't drive off in the meantime.

Alrighty. I have not driven the car for month's because my wife has assumed complete control! Anyway it just seems that the gas engine is almost always running? I thought it would run on the electric when putzing slowly the last times I drove it? Any acceleration kicks in the gasser no matter how gently you accelerate. Guess I just dont recall? I have very few miles driving the car actually. The wife is averaging 43 mpg. Guessing this is normal?

    Sounds like all is well.

On another note the car makes a kinda grinding noise for several seconds when I get in? It stops and all seems fine. I also do not recall hearing that before? It then starts fine and away we go. It may make the same noise after shut down also. If I recall. Is this the brake sys I seam to recall reading about?

    Thanks for the advise!

4 hours!? I don't think cleaning my battery fan took more than an hour, and that included learning how to get it out of the car. Granted, I didn't use q tips, just some MAF cleaner (I figured MAFs are usually plastic so the cleaner shouldn't hurt the fan) and compressed air.

It does require a fair amount of disassembly of the hatch area, but it's not that big a job. :)

Also, one thing I haven't seen mentioned much in these "just purchased" threads is light bulbs. I got pulled over the first full day I had mine because I had a tail light out. When I checked around the car, it turned out there were several other less critical bulbs (marker, license plate, etc.) that were also burned out. Since you can't see most of them from inside the car it's an easy thing to miss.

It actually will not run on electric only unless the hybrid vehicle (HV) battery is very full. You have to remember that a Prius is not an EV, it is a gas car with electric assist. Ultimately, all energy in the HV battery is as a result of combusting fuel via the engine. For it to be otherwise, would defy the laws of physics. So, don't expect it to run on electric and don't try too hard to make it do so. If you do, you will likely hurt the fuel economy figures not help them.
There are two systems that will run at around those times. At the beginning and end of a drive cycle the heat recovery coolant pump will run to move coolant from the thermos to the engine at the beginning and from the engine to the thermos at the end.

The second sound will be the ABS pump which will run to increase pressure to the accumulator. if required. That activates when the door is opened.

As mentioned- the Gen2 Prius is primarily powered by the gasoline engine. Once the car is moving there are circumstances where you can "glide" - that is cruising on flat roads at light throttle under 40 where the car is running on battery power alone. You can do that for half a mile or more depending on the battery state of charge.

Another thing to be aware of- when the climate controls are on (ie, the fan is blowing air) AND the temperature is set to anything above the outside ambient temperature, THEN the car is trying to heat the passenger compartment and will aggressively run the engine to keep the coolant hot.

Very true. It’s really not. But I’m very through and if I was going to take it apart I was going to super clean it to the point where you can eat off of it. Literally. I ran flour sack towels through each plastic vent section after I washed the insides with dish soap and then dried them out. I travel for work so when I finally do have time I really tear into a cleaning especially on my wife’s car. I hate getting the call from her that something broke and I’m away for 8 more days before I’m home. LOL. But yeah you can do it in an hour.

New issue. CEL is on this am. Nothing seems wrong otherwise in startup and a couple block test? I did change the key fob batt a couple days ago and have not used the car since. I have not pulled any codes. The water pump is starting and humming away. I dont really notice coolant movement in the res however? Just thought I'd post here for the heck of it! Having a great time with the car otherwise. Averaging 42-43mpg otherwise.

can be as simple as a loose or defective gas cap, or much more complicated.

if you're not seeing fluid movement with the car ready, it's either a defective pump, loose/corroded connections or blown fuse

Would I be correct guessing that loose/corroded connections or blown fuse is unlikely as the pump feels/sounds as if it is humming along normally?

It means the evap system components on the Toy are just as susceptible to gravel road dust as the 2 Chev Impala's I own;)
First thing I am going to do is clean up the fill cap and clear the code. See what happens at that point. The wife did not have the cap tight. Never know!

    Thanks.

Still enjoying the car. Replaced the muffler as well as the front wheel bearings today. Thought I'd stop in to say hello.
