My 2025 Camry, by default, sets the parking brake when turning off the ignition. If desired ( and I don't), you can enable brake hold so you do not need to keep your foot on the brake when at a stop light.. just use the accelerator to start moving again.

I think I accidentally tried exiting without turning the Prius off & it complained mightily! If you remote start the 2025 Camry or it detects no key, it will only run 10 minutes. If you leave the key in the car, it turns off after an hour.

The electrically operated Parking Brake does have advantages especially in a hybrid when the engine is off, you are getting out but the car is still in Ready.

It will automatically apply the parking brake if you open the door while in "gear" without the seat belt on.

There is an Auto apply in P mode and release in D, B or R as an option. That option is controlled by the Parking Brake switch by simply holding it up for a few seconds. It's one of those RTFM learning curve items.

I would HOPE the trick for getting the car out of Park when the hybrid system is disabled also turns off the Parking Brake. On recent cars, the hybrid system is disabled if a collision was detected.

Seems a bit nitpicky but ok. The press release highlighted the new colour with the Nightshade trim.

I think the intent is some users here were likely waiting for the 2025 Prius. To my eyes, I think the interior was updated, at a minimum. One thing I disliked on the 2023-2024 Prius was the way the multimedia screen jutted above the dashboard like an afterthought or to look like Tesla. LOL They made different dash style decisions n the Camry, for instance.

Costs go beyond parts, and include things like fines for not meeting efficiency targets. The parking brake cable could be over 10 pounds.

The dash is the same in the bZ4X and RZ, and likely intended to be paired with their steering yoke. The Camry is their more traditional model, and might even have had more input from Toyota USA.

In addition to the weight, there's complexity. For ignition, a push button and some software may be simpler and cheaper than a real key and tumbler, and an electric window mechanism may be lighter and more reliable than a crank. A simplified parking brake may have similar benefits.

A handbrake can be an important driving feature for some cars. For the GR Corolla, it was incorporated, but there had to be a cutout mechanism for the rear drive for it to be effective. That's a lot of extra junk to put into an economy car that isn't ever going to use a parking brake for anything but parking.

Then there's an issue of packaging. For every one of us who would like a handbrake to use during driving, there are probably 20 potential buyers who would prefer to use that space for cup holders and other controls, and who might even see a handbrake as old fashioned.

Advantage & disadvantage. Yes an electrically actuated pin gets jammed into the works so nothing will move. Lots of ways that is good. Parking brake, (used to be called emergency brake) at one time long ago meant you could feather brake the wheels to a stop. Ever tried doing that with the new parking brake?
So maybe it would be $10 instead of $5. Why not have both.
Is the extra 10lbs really going to make the mileage any worse or car stop any slower?
Used to be shoe repair places too

Prius used to have an emergency brake on the floor .... simple as having the high beam button down there too. Don't get me started.......

But what financial benefit would there be for Toyota Global to take the financial and weight hit? I remember when they dropped the rear wiper and, later, the cargo cover from the Prius Two Eco compared to other trims to meet their target weight for their mileage claim.

No, yes, I don't think so.

The Nightshade comes in both FWD and AWD.
The Nightshade only comes with 19" wheels(that are specific to the Nightshade)
The Nightshade seats appear to be the same color as the other seats. The only difference is that the little strips of silver near the top of the seat backs are replaced with a much more muted smokey dark silver. (This will be able to be confirmed once part numbers are available for the 2025s. If the headrests, back seats, and front seat bottoms are the same part numbers between the Nightshade and XLE/LTD, then they're the same color black.)

The other interior differences are the door handles are black instead of silver and the dash trim under the blue LED is black with a "carbon fiber" print instead of silver w/cf print.

No changes to the 2025 interior except in the Nightshade. Not sure what you think you're seeing.

Yeah that's true; once you open the door it starts buzzing.

I virtually never touch the Park button, just hit the power button, which puts it in park. Old school with keys though, assuming it's on a key chain with other keys you need, you tend to get muscle memory: shift to park, turn off key, pull it out.

LOL I still occasionally find myself stomping my left foot for the parking brake. I need to do that in my Tundra.

Heck, I love the electric parking brake. In my region(northern climate but super flat), nobody with automatic transmissions use parking brakes. That usually means that, when you actually need them, they're rusted solid. Electric parking brakes bypass that problem completely.

Changing rear brake pads gets "interesting", requires a chicken dance to release the caliper piston.
