Mendel, what's the distance center to center on those holes? Sounds similar to the crank holding tool they sell for 1uz-fe crank bolt removal ($45).

Is it worth two hours and 17 minutes?

I got about halfway through it yesterday. It's definitely thorough, and closer to the reality of a DIY'r, say compared to the Gasket Masters videos. The guy is a pretty experienced mechanic, comfortable with an arsenal of tools, and I get the sense it's not his first Prius head gasket. I'll definitiely be watching the rest.

There seems to be an increasing number of such videos available, and I've got lots of time. This one's a little less "flashy", more content and thorough. :)

Which holes? I'll take a wild stab: the threaded holes on the beltless pulley at end of crankshaft, that has to come off before the timing chain cover can come off? I cobbled a jig for that, just thin wood with a couple of 3/8" holes to see if I had it right, and c/c of those holes is 85 mm.

It's a pretty good video. Except for the noise of people banging on instruments, and the thumbs up and subcribe things
popping up and the stupid upside down car at the top.
I HOPE he put in a new oil filter... :)

I wished he would have filled up the oil and coolant and started it up though....

'Nother video, mercifully shorter. All of these seem to come at the job from different perspectives, but there's always something to learn:

This one a case of the "the operation was a success, but the patient died": he got to the head gasket, but found cylinder walls badly scuffed.

Looking for recommended repair shops in the Seattle area, please :)

I'm not finding those head gasket videos by Gasket Master that you refer to.
Any way one of you could share links to them, please?

Mendel, thank you for all your informative posts. I like others have been inspired by the GM video to do my own HG replacement on my 2010 Prius with 218K. I am sorry the video is now longer up. Is there a link to the new video or other videos that are instructional? I am particularly concerned about all things related to the timing chain and cover. Access to the shop manual would be much appreciated.

I also thought the video was well done/explained. The jig you mention, any pics of that? Thanks!

    Here I posted some info:

Mechanics: what are your most common tools? | Page 15 | PriusChat

I'd consider ChapmanF's comments (directly after) valid as well: the traditional pulley restraint looks something like this, and it's much more versatile, can fit a wide range. Something like this:

    upload_2023-1-11_6-22-31.png

All said, with this beltless pulley, might be one time to cheat. You can break the bolt loose with an impact, maybe when reinstalling, just make sure no one's looking, and "torque" it with the impact, say 3~4 chugs.

Awesome! Thank you! Now going to attempt the EGR fix, including new EGR, and PCV with cleaning all of the parts. Using Toyota parts, may video some of it. Car has 314K
    Thanks again

Thank you for your info! Completed the job, left off that stud and nut, seems reasonably sturdy without it. Changed plugs, cleaned manifold (never seen oil like that accumulate) and 3 days on the cooler. Zipped it up, only thing left is to clear the MAF code, which seems to happen at times according to the threads.
315K miles on this former taxi, and loving the car!

Was that the first EGR cleanout on that car? Original head gasket? How's the oil usage? We had someone here recently claiming these engines never go over 300k without head gasket failure.
