It's a new technology that will only improve over time when greater storage capacities are available and better algorithms are built. It's normal growing pains for the early adopters.

Maybe someday we'll get daily data updates by satellite every time you turn on your car with a summary of local changes: "Fred's BBQ went out of business"

Just to make sure, people are setting their Nav system region to correspond to where they live, right? My car came with a different region set, and the nav system's accuracy improved when I set it my region.

Let's not forget the fun & joy of driving between two areas in the NAV system. I took the Prius up to Canada last week. I couldn't understand why none of my searches were working in my driveway until I swapped out the region.

The thing that gets me is adresses. It seems completely random whether or not it is "Street", "St." or "St".

Does the new system let you REROUTE from where you are rather than it asking you do do a U-turn and go back 50 miles to do what SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED wants?

SWMBO never required me to make a U-turn and go back. She always recalculates a new route when I disobey her directions.

I've had a couple of times where it tries to get me to u-turn and go back, but that's part of the rerouting process. After a mile or so, it reroutes again and sends me on my way. Usually this happens on parkways and other long stretches of road with few connecting streets.

More often than not, it reroutes on the fly and doesn't ask me to turn around.

What sequence do you press on the monitor?
Say it wants me to take a surface road, but I get on a parkway (and I have specified a toll road), then it wants me to get off at the next exit and tries to reroute to the old surface road. Maybe I am not tweaking it right. Hints?

I had the same problem this past Saturday. We were going to the Stars on Ice show in Lake Placid. Our normal route is to go south about 20 minutes to the Charlotte-Essex ferry so I made sure "ferry" was allowed before setting the destination. SWMBO decided I wanted the Burlington ferry 2 miles north. It doesn't run in the winter though I wouldn't expect the NAV DVD to have that info. The other route I could have selected was to go across the bridge farther south.

I turned south expecting SWMBO to find the other ferry but she kept wanting me to turn around. It wasn't until we actually turned on to Ferry Rd in Charlotte (a mile or so to the ferry) that she decided we would be allowed to take that one.

My wife thought it funny that the map showed us still at the dock all the way across until we got off the ferry. I figure the DVD just doesn't have any GPS coordinates for the lake so it doesn't adjust the current postion until it gets a reasonable match.

I believe that the moving image on the map is generated by sensing the speed and direction of travel from the wheels and steering wheel. There is a calibration screen to use when changing tires. Sometimes the map will indicate traveling through buildings and at other times miss showing me moving over to a transition road when changing freeways. When this occurs, the location icon eventually jumps to the correct location. Based upon that experience, I believe that the NAV takes only snapshots of the GPS data as opposed to a constantly using the satellite data to calculate the actual location of the car in coordinates.

Hmm. I have seen NAV want me to u-turn if I just deviated, but if I travel an entire exit (which on much of the Suncoast is several miles), then it will re-route as if that were my starting point.

Some have stated things improved when they set their region properly, though usually that was for finding destinations. Egret32, do you have the region set to SE?
I'd be curious to try your situation in my car.

Yes, set for SE, of course. (I figured this out the first day...when nothing worked.)

I have often rented cars in other cities with GPS that worked so intiutitively that I was surprised at how tricky this one is. Of course it has so many features...and it did get me to the Bonefish Grill in Tampa the other day fast when I was hungry and on the way from the airport. Have you tried saying: "I'm hungry?"

When I heard about it, yes, I did try it. Bunch of restaurants popped up.

Because the addresses on the NAV's streets are skewed, it has restaurants a block away from where they should be. Info has the address right though.

    Egret,

Check to make sure that your search conditions are allowing freeways. You can set it up so that it tries to use secondary roads. Every time you get on the parkway, it may be trying to get you on the road less traveled.

I have a similar problem with roads that have been widened in my area. The NAV system still thinks they're 35 mph two lane roads instead of the four lane divided highways they have become.

I thought she said she checked that, or I would have suggested it. But in any case, I would double check that no road preferences are are deselected.

Yes, said to allow freeways and toll roads since this is a toll road. And one I am pleased to support. It cuts off an hour of travel and the old fogeys around here hate to pay the tolls, so it is almost empty most of the time. I figure what I save in gas goes to tolls...although my real commute is from my bedroom to my office--about 100 feet.

Gee, never thought of myself as an old fogey, even if I am closing in on 40, but $3.25 one way twice a day 5 days a week can get pricey, and because of the I-275 interchange, backs up at the tail end of Veterans, so it doesn't save me an hour to get to Clearwater. Would be quite beneficial of my destination was Tampa though.

It's great for getting to TIA on the occasion I need to.

I don't do it daily, but a trip to the airport breezes by, especially in my you-know-what.

I just got a call from the LOCAL dealer. MY DVD is in. Took 2 days. I'll get it installed Monday, because that is the soonest I can.

And, I am OLDER than you...but hated the slow drive to Tampa so much that I don't mind the tolls.
