THANKS, jrfaris! Comparing yours to v5.1, I see new cities popping up on the detailed coverage maps, and many existing cities expanding coverage. I think this thread could be a good tool to find out what minimum version will increase coverage in an area someone might be interested in. So where's those 4.2 screens, folks? Should be lots of copies out there. Just take your camera out to the car, and follow the instructions in the first message!
ROFLMAO -- I can see right where my house is. Also, BBQ Bill's is a client of mine as well as the house right next to it on Wildfire. The roads are perfect in the area shown. The POIs are good too. WOW And I was worried about Google  You are really GOOD!! Thanks for the effort, this really eases my mind. BTW I see where the Upper Valley Area of Vermont/New Hampshire had detailed info on the 3.3 version, but does NOT have it detailed on the latest version???? That is really odd to have less info in some areas with the newest version? Anyone else see a similar drop in coverage in their area?
Huh, that is odd... I wonder if the detail is in there, but for some reason it got dropped off the detailed coverage map?
As promised, I took pictures from my car, which I shall be posting presently, but before I do, I just had to chime in on the discussion of the Nav's aptitude in Vermont. Having spent April to October of this year in Vermont with my Prius before moving, I am happy to report that I had no troubles at all with locations in Vermont, with one exception- it seemed to be a little bit off here and there insofar as street addresses. Once I get the pictures off of my camera, I shall post them here forthwith!
As the pictures demonstrate, I have DVD v4.2, not v4.3 as I misremembered in an earlier post. Here are the pictures! Thanks Ghoti. That is very helpful to me. We don't get any cell phone coverage at my house, but at least I will be able to get back home with my new nav system.
My '02 Prius lacks a "Covered Area" button, so I found the booklet that came with the DVD. I have Version 04.1 for the '01-03 - this is not the same version as 04.1 for the '04-05. "Route guidance available areas" are identical to the Detailed Area Coverage reported for version 04.2 for the '04-05, except in Canada. Guidance available areas reported for Canada: Kamloops, Kelowna, Squamish, Vancouver, Victoria, and Whistler, BC; Banff, Calgary, and Edmonton, AB; Barrie, Hamilton, Kingston, London, Stratford, Toronto, and Windsor, ON; Montreal and Quebec, QC. I will try to scan the booklet this week.
So just getting back to the first post in the thread... Am I correct in saying that 4.2 does not break things that worked in earlier versions? Because in a different Nav-related thread here, there was another post that said 4.2 messed stuff up (though that post may admittedly have been quoting a misunderstanding). In other words, if my dealer gives out 4.2 when 40J is performed, is the only "badness" associated with that that I didn't luck out and get 5.1, or can 4.2 actually be a step backwards? If it matters, I live near Boston, MA.
Right, at least in my experience, v4.2 doesn't seem to have any shortcomings other than whatever goodies may have been added in v5.1.
4.2 was not as good as 3.3 for me. In my area of the hill country, they dropped a fairly well travelled road from the database and routing is less efficient. Turn by turn guidance is no longer available in large areas of the rural areas around me that had it available with 3.3. On the flip side, they did correct some areas of a road that was rerouted so I no longer appear to go off into a field. On balance the 3.3 is better than 4.2 for my area. I saved the 3.3 disk and have considered switching back. I haven't done it yet because I don't really need it in my area and 4.2 may be an improvement in areas that I do need the nav system in.(Houston for example)
Hey, I just noticed that Newfoundland is shown on the '06 version, whereas it isn't on the '05 version that Wayne posted to begin this thread. I wonder what other differences there are??
Attached are some specs on the new 2006 NAV system from Denso Corp. Sorry if someone else has already posted it but I didn't find it using PriusChat search.
