i don't recall anyone without animals saying the fan was dirty enough that it absolutely had to be cleaned, except the character who started this thread.

I have a Generation 3, And dogs. So I purchased the inlet cover from Toyota, $12.
It has a "pretend" filter on it. Which is better than NOT having it. But I also purchased this:
From Lowe's: Frost King Washable Filter
    Item # 78359 Model # F1524
    It was $2.00.
Then I cut a piece out to match the cover and installed.

It does a GREAT job of catching all the fur. And it just pops off and easy to wash and reinstall.
I'm the 2nd owner and the 1st owner did not have dogs. So I'm "guessing" it's not too dirty.
One day I will get around to cleaning out the fan and ducts....

I'm not sure about other generations of Prius, but I'm certain it would would.

How did you attach the Frost filter to the OEM inlet cover?

I just laid it in the back of the housing, then it snaps over the inlet.
