Pelosi visits Saudi Arabia

"RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) visited Saudi Arabia's unelected advisory council Thursday, the closest thing in the kingdom to a legislature, where she tried out her counterpart's chair — a privilege no Saudi woman can have because women cannot become legislators."

"Pelosi arrived in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, meeting with Abdullah at his farm outside Riyadh.

Earlier Wednesday, she met in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar Assad, bringing a sharp rebuke from the White House. The Bush administration said the visit undermined its policy of isolating Syria, which it accuses of supporting terrorism.

Pelosi and her delegation — which included a House Republican — aimed to challenge the policy, arguing that talking with Damascus is the only way to push it to change its ways. Another Republican congressman, Darrell Issa (news, bio, voting record), met with Assad on Thursday, the latest in a string of lawmakers from both parties who have made the trip in recent months."

"Pelosi was welcomed at the Shura council by its head, Sheik Saleh bin Humaid, who is also the imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca. He placed his right hand on his chest in a traditional Arab greeting, since conservative Islamic clerics don't shake hands with women, and she returned the greeting in a similar manner."

I find it ludricous that anyone can think that ANYONE can find "facts" by visiting Syria...or ANY country for that manner that "hosts" you and shows you around. The only FACT that Ms. pelosi will find is that Syria indeed does exist, and the leaders do exist, and that they CAN speak and tell her things.

Very few FACT finding missions find any useful FACTS.

I will be interested in knowing what "FACTS" she will find...more likely she will call "STATEMENTS" by their leaders...FACTS, which is stupid because she calls statements by Bush...LIES.

Just think about it......

Oh, BTW.... I disagree with her going...but, whatever...she is allowed.

3 Republicans Part With Bush on Syria

WASHINGTON — Three Republican congressmen who parted with President Bush by meeting with Syrian leaders said Wednesday it is important to maintain a dialogue with a country the White House says sponsors terrorism.

"I don't care what the administration says on this. You've got to do what you think is in the best interest of your country," said Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va.

Bush sharply criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for leading a delegation to meet with Syria's president, Bashar Assad.

The White House, however, stayed relatively quiet about a similar trip just a few days earlier by Wolf and GOP Reps. Robert Aderholt of Alabama and Joseph Pitts of Pennsylvania.

"This is an area where we would disagree with the administration," Aderholt said. "None of us in the Congress work for the president.

Nope. Speaker Pelosi is ursurping the Administration's role in conducting foreign policy. The House has no constitutional standing to conduct any kind of "shuttle diplomacy"; you could argue that Senators have some standing, as they "advise and consent" on appointments to the diplomatic corps and State Department. But not House members.

This Democrat Congress feels it has been given a mandate to change direction in the country, but there's a problem: we do not have a parlimentary system. They are free to pursue their legislative agenda, but we did not install Speaker Pelosi as Prime Minister. The Democrat Congress is violating the spirit of the Constitution, but so many of their supporters have been lying about the Administration's approach to the Constitution, attributing false quotes about it being just a "piece of paper" in one of the more outrageous liberal lies, that they have become blind to the document itself.

The childish "we just need to talk to them!" sentiment among those in the left ignores the fact that one of the first, and most important, bargining chips this country has is whether or not we will hold high level meetings with a country. If we will not, most of the rest of the industrialized world will not either. So while we are holding out the promise of talks if they will simply comply with standards we should all agree with, our diplomats are still very much involved ... do we not have an Embassy in Syria, with an Ambassador?

Speaker Pelosi holds a higher office in our government than "mom with a gavel". She is the Speaker of the House, a high constitutional office that is third in line to the Presidency. It has well defined and legal responsibilities, and conducting foreign affairs is not one of them. She should come home and resume her legal, constitutional duties or resign her position as Speaker before her mistakes cause the rest of the Congress to censure her.

 

Wow... This Democratic Congress sure is doing a bunch of AWESOME things...

This "Logan Act" attempt to make Nancy Pelosi a felon (I guess it doesn't apply to the Republican congressmen who also traveled to Syria, does it!) has been all over the right-wing blogosphere today, but it simply does not apply. Notice that it starts with, "Private correspondence with foreign governments"? That means you or me, not a member of the House of Representatives. To begin with, the constitutionality of the Logan Act has always been questioned, mainly because of the vagueness of how it's written. A House memo from last year cautions members leaving government service of the provisions of the Logan Act, so it is clearly intended to prohibit private citizens acting in an official capacity. Reagan attempted to invoke it against Jesse Jackson when he went to Cuba, but that went nowhere. So good luck in your continuing effort to send Nancy to prison, but you'll have to employ another strategy.
