okay, they didn't tighten the plug, and the parts guy is your witness. the oil change place owes you an engine.
this is a pretty common occurrence, and they have insurance to cover it, so don't take no for an answer.
    was it jiffy boob?

Number one rule of any investigation is how often does the person's story change or contradict itself from how reality actually works.

If this story were true it would of gone as follows: heard a noise, car started running rough and smelled oil and saw smoke (oil on exhaust system) red triangle goes on, pull over, car is still smoking, call friend, while trying to to look at car and where smoke is coming from I see a long train of oil from where I was drving.

Of course if you eliminated the witness who claimed oil drain plug was "completely gone." Then you're talking about a loose oil filter or damaged oil pan from road debris.

My guess is original poster is testing her false story so it seems credible enough to pin the blame on the oil change place. But the story failed the test.

not everyone recalls things in the same way. and someone who is clueless about cars might have a different interpretation of events.

Yes, but if you lose your motor oil while driving it goes everywhere, especially on the exhaust manifold and that creates smoke... I guess they need to add that into their story so the scam works... But without a police report, I'm sure the oil change place's lawyers will say that there's no case against them.

idk, if you drain plug falls out while you're driving moderately, it might all pour onto the road

PS: Stating the you're already a disgruntled customers at Midas prior to incidence further weakens the validity of your claim...

Yeah if it behaves the same when the car's running as it does when doing an oil change, about 95% of the oil is drained in 20~30 seconds, it's down to a drip.

One thing though: the drain bolt could have been hung up on the last thread, draining slowly, till it finally shook loose. Who knows.

Gullible that you and others would believe this ridiculous story after you thought it through... First it was 20 minutes driving and then it was 5 minutes of driving but 20 minutes total between phone calls tow truck, etc. so dishonest.

The motive is a ruined engine and denial / blaming someone else is the first stage of the grieving over the car being ruined.

Regardless of the sequence of events leading to this discussion, it seems conclusive that OP needs a new engine for her 2007 Prius Base. The value of the car is less than what it would cost to fix it. End of story.

Unless you purchased a used engine from a wreck and installed it yourself... Of course that's not what this thread is about. And if the original poster really was being honest they would be pissed and say so... But instead the silence is even more evidence of the real story of what happened not being presented.
