    I know that on some of our public works projects where the budget is extremely tight (usually parks), we have used decomposed granite for driveways and walkways. You might check on that...

    I wish I had your problem "50 year Oaks". Why not consider what others have mentioned? It would probably quarter your costs.........install to concrete areas for your vehicle tires and plant the median with grass.

    When my father replaced his driveway 10 years ago he handed my brother and I each a sledgehammer and said "go to it". Of course I was 18 and my brother was 21. A 30'x40' driveway takes a LONG time to break up with sledgehammers. We then had to load the concrete into my father's 1971 dodge ram and take it to the dump.

    On the other hand, you live in San Diego. I suspect day laborers can be found pretty cheap!

    Tile, that is a new one for me. My wife and I just ripped out all the wallpaper in the guest bathroom in our new house. It was applied by the contractor that built the house straight over the drywall. :angry: We are going to do tile, so wish me luck.

    Thanks for this thread. I've been thinking of expanding the 10x10 pad in my backyard by another 10x10. Also to extend the driveway by another 6x12. I've had two pavers come out for estimates, both asked for around $2000, plus $25 per sprinkler head that needs to be plugged and/or moved.

    This solution would be so much better for my driveway, and possibly for the backyard too. I can leave the sprinkler system alone and have more green to enjoy.

    Hopefully I won't have to get permission from the HOA tyrants to do this...

    I read through that on the specs link page at soilretention.com. I figure if it could stand up to use at a Firestation it could handle my Prius and my little driveway.
