Your Mom did good.

She listened to you and she bought a Prius. Luck she got the color she liked and so quick too.

She listened to you and didn't buy the prepaid maintenance plan.

And she gets the full tax credit.

Don't beat yourself up over it. 2 out of 3 isn't bad. And the error was in her favor. Lucky Mom.

the tax credit does two things: it shows support for hybrid technology (which while good, is really only a political move by people who want to get reelected) and it gives Detroit a chance to get into the game a little easier. None of them had a serious effort in hybrids before the tax credit. Given the numbers everyone knew Toyota and Honda would sell this year, Their alotment would go by much quicker, and be phased out, while detroit has a whole year to market to people "hey, we've still got the full tax credit... come to us and save even more than you would with those other hybrids".

If the politicians really wanted to support hybrid technology, they'd make it even across the board... no phase out or limits for manufacturers, instead just have a firm end date for everyone. Or even better, no end date.

It was a deficit decision. If 5 auto makers each sell 60,000 hybrids at an average tax credit of $2500 it works out to $750,000,000 that doesn't go into the treasury. Considering the horrendous shape of the national debt I guess we should be grateful for what we got.

What idiots in Congress set up the tax credit for hybrids as it is? You would think they would want more people to buy hybrids and thus reduce the dependance on foreign oil. So my question is why is there any deadline or point when it stops based on the number of cars put in service? If the Repug controlled Congress can give the rich one tax break after another why aren't they giving responsible citizens like us a tax break that actually benefits everybody by helping to have cleaner air and less dependance on foreign oil?
