So, I connected the OBDLink LX adaptor and fired up the HA app today. It had no problem connecting and live data was displayed. It also generated an HA report that seems to be correct at first glance. The strange thing is that I did not do anything to fix the problem on my end. It kinda fixed all by itself.

The version of the app I have now on my phone is 3.311.0. Unfortunately, I did not check the app version when I first encountered the OBBDII initialization problem back in July last year and when I rechecked it a few weeks ago. It could be that App was updated or my phone's OS was updated during that time frame that fixed whatever the bug(s) prevented the OBDII to be initialized correctly.

That is great! I will go try my phone with the veepeak adapter, if it does not work I'll buy an LX adapter.

One thing I noticed yesterday, the newer version of HA tells us to shutdown / close the app every time you turn the car off. It also tells us to restart / shutdown / restart the app when choosing Hybrid Reporter from the app menu after running the app during a trip.

When I plugged in my cheapo ODB2 bluetooth today and opened HA, it initialized normally and showed prius prime and a couple of the gauges were also working. It also told me my cheapo bluetooth was bad and not sending enough data.

The reason I'm describing above is that the second time I opened HA yesterday after turning off the car and shutting down HA was, HA didn't initialize on the second startup. So, I figured I'd start from scratch, turn off the car and pull the bluetooth adapter out of the ODB2 socket, plug the bluetooth back into the socket, start the car and open the app the second time. HA initialized again, the same as the first time I opened the app yesterday.

Same procedure worked a third to yesterday too.

I didn't have luck with my adapter.
The LX, and mx adapter cost more than I thought, I'll wait for a good sale and buy one.

This is my first post. I'd like to thank the contributors to this thread. I finally got the hybrid assistant app to work on my 2021 Prius prime LE + OBDlink LX. The key for me was entering the code KARF in the database maintenance page. I confirmed this on two different phones. Thank you again. I am quite excited to 'geek out' with all the data I can now see.

I have several other adapters that I bought before the LX and before I got Hybrid Assistant. Their cost added up to about what I paid for the LX except that none of them works with HA. The LX does it all. If I'd bought it first, I'd have spent half as much in total.

Yeah, I have two other adaptors Carista (bought on sale for $15 but now cost ~$30) and Panlong (bought online ~$10 it is still sold at amazon for $14). OBDLink LX was ~$70 5 years ago and still is about the same price. I bought both Carista and Panlong adaptors after LX. Why? I bought Carista to use the app, at that time the app only worked with the Carista adaptor, but now their app also works with LX. I bought Panlong as my backup. Although it was not on the list of HA-recommended adaptors, it had a good review for other apps and was cheap enough.

BTW here is the opening screen of HA now that shows the 12v battery voltage and warns of the use of "cheap" adaptor @vvillovv commented above. One with the Warning is with Carista adaptor and the other is with LX adaptor.

The other thing is, they make an MX adapter that's even better. Is it better to save and buy this instead of lx?
I have a blue driver one already, and a cheap veepeak.

My understanding is that MX's advantage is that it can be used on iOS and have a few more vehicle-specific diagnosis protocols. However, I am not sure if the MX offers more diagnostic tools than LX on a PP. For purely using for HA app, I don't see MX offering anything more than LX can do. HA app is not available on iOS.

As far as I can tell, the main difference is that the MX works with IOS (Apple) while the LX doesn't.

    Salamander beat me to it!

BTW, they have discontinued the MX in favor of the MX+

I hadn't realized that the LX doesn't work with iOS. I checked and what a bummer!

Just out of interest, HA (with OBDLink MX+) still does not work with an Australian 2019 (gen5) Rav4 hybrid. Although the HA site says it supports 2019 Rav4, when it failed and I contacted them they simply replied: "this model is not supported". HA must not work upside down (or maybe we get what we pay for).

But the OBDLink app included with their (increasingly expensive) interface devices is good, and OBDLink (=ScanTool) support is good in their forum. The other advantages of MX+ over LX (apart from support of both Android and iOS) are that MX+ supports more vehicles (like Ford and GM), and comes with unlimited free OEM data-add-ons (the Toyota ones are amazing). Maybe worth it if you plan to use it on several different model cars.
