Start shopping for a comparable Gen2. If the car is totalled they'll need to buy you that one or you can move up to a Gen3 Four or Five.

I loved my Gen2 but after putting almost 30,000 miles on the Gen3 I wouldn't go back.

I had my 2006 Prius towed to the dealership today. They told me upfront that I was wasting my time having them do an estimate because "Progressive never pays what we estimate."

I received a call from the other persons insurance company today. His insurance is through Berkley Mid-Atlantic.

    Berkley Mid-Atlantic Group

Never heard of them before. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out over the next week or two...

Well the other drivers insurance should cover the cost of the repairs. Berkley Mid-Atlantic appears to be a commercial insurance company.

Should know more in a few days or so.

Spoke with my insurance adjuster and the dealership today to give the green light for repairs. I am being told the car is repairable with an estimate of $10k.

The dog damage to my '07 on the front end was similar, but no engine rad was hit, just the AC rad, and nothing moved in the engine compartment either, just the obvious broken stuff. Repairs totaled just over 5k for everything. Car is as good as before, maybe?

On 6/30/11 I spoke with my insurance company. Their estimate to repair my 2006 Toyota Prius is $8500 using a combination of OEM and after market parts. I advised the estimator that the reason I took it to a Toyota Certified Collision Center was to have only OEM parts installed on it.

The estimator had no idea about the working parts of the Prius. He described the inverter cooling canister as "the metal round thing by the bumper". I told him he didn't seem qualified to write an estimate on a car he knew little about.

Because of the issues I am having with my insurance company I have decided to hire a lawyer to take care of everything for me. I am a working business professional and I can't have my time wasted with daily multiple phone calls taking up my time.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? I feel lost with this whole accident thing.....

Yeah, the shop my insurance company advised me to use didn't even know how to start the Prius! I called the agent after I left and related what happened in very strong tone, (I was a bit upset they would send me to a shop that knew nothing about the Prius)!
I took it straight to the dealer. Here in New York State, the shop and the insurance company work out the pricing. They work together to get your car fixed up. Thousands of dollars later, I was back in my car.
Now, get this - I picked up my car, went straight to work. Got about ten miles down the road and still no heat. It was winter out. Then the dash warning lights come on. I pull over and shut the car off, call the dealer, tell them I am returning right now because there was no coolant in the engine! I KNEW right away they had forgotten to fill the coolant system. I just KNEW it.
So, I went back, they filled it up, and were so sorry they let me drive off like that.
Dealers suck also, that's all I'm saying. I don't even let them change my oil anymore. Every time I'd take the car in they always try to upsell me on something I didn't ask for. It got to be very annoying. Also, waiting 2 hours for a scheduled oil change to happen was getting a bit old also. Look, I call days ahead and schedule a time to bring my car in for and oil change, I expect to get my oil change then, not an hour or two later!
    Dealers suck!
    Dealers suck!
    Rant over!

    ****Update****

My 2006 Toyota Prius will be repaired and ready for pick up this Friday July 29, 2011.

    Here are the Details:

The final estimate to repair my car at a Toyota Certified Collision Center using all OEM Parts was $9,269.59.

The repairs took 33 days to complete.

I had an independent appraisal done and was told my car was worth $16,356 prior to the accident and will be worth $9,800 once the repairs are complete.

I'm not sure what to expect when I pick my car up on Friday. Will it drive like it did prior to the accident or will it shimmy and shake? I'm expecting the worst but at the same time hoping for the best.

I will provide an update with pics on Friday after I pick my repaired Prius up from the body shop.

So is the insurance company going to reimburse you the difference?

Thanks for the update and good luck!

I know you paid to have it done, but not all insurance companies honour such diminished value claims. Did you confirm with your provider that they will pay the difference? If so, then it sounds like you were "made whole" as the law says. If you don't like it after you get it, then you can sell it for $9,800 and buy another non wrecked one for $16,356 making you come out even with a car just like you had before the accident.

Most insurance companies exclude first party dv claims but 3rd party dv claims are recognized by insurance companies in all 50 states.

If the at fault insurance company fails to recognize my claim I will file a small claims case against the other party and it's insurance company will be obligated to defend them in court.

Spoke too soon! My Prius will not be ready for pick up until Monday 8/1/11 at the earliest. Will we break the $10k mark on the estimate between now and then?

The dealership advised me that a check engine light illuminated during a test drive and that a pump valve needed to be replaced. Anyone know exactly what this would be?

Mylar, just make sure the 12v battery is charged before they try and start it or the Triangle of death will light up. Worth thinking about! And good luck with your repaired Prius. Hal

My 2006 Toyota should be ready for pick up tomorrow 8/2/11. The last part requiring replacement was a Water Valve part # 1667021010.

It's taken 37 days and $9416.19 to repair. Keeping my fingers crossed.

    Hi Mylar,

Many thanks for keeping us posted with all the details. I am posting this to share my sad story :( I don't have a prius though, but I bought a brand new 2011 Camry, and within a week (less than 250 miles on it) it got rear ended :( The insurance wants to fix it and I was trying to force them to total that (who wants to drive a wrecked brand new car). But they won't buzz. Long story short, they came up with a ~14K of repair estimate, and I already contacted with a Toyota certified collision center who would fix the car in that estimate.

Now, I have some question. Definitely I am gonna fight for diminished value. I paid 24K for that car, and I don't think anyone would even pay me 15K for that. So, any suggestion on claiming diminished value? I saw you generated report from Autoloss.com. How much did they charge you? I am certainly not giving it up, and if the insurance try to avoid me, I will definitely sue them. I am just sooo sad :( I got couple of estimates, and everyone told me I should expect at least 8K diminished value. We will see ... I will also keep you posted about the details. I would really appreciate any suggestion about the diminished value claim.

BTW, how is your prius doing? Does it drive like it was before?
