My 12V battery is 6 years old & working fine=Should I replace it before 3000 mile trip?

    I decided that batteries often (not always) let you know when they are unhappy. Willing to wait until they whine before I bow before the altar of energy and replace them.

    Have not been stranded yet in -- what -- 15 years or so of driving.

    I hope you did not change the old one...
    I think it will be a good idea to carry the new battery as a support, but use the old one as much as possible...

    this is how i felt until my 2012 battery let me down. 50 years of driving, and the first time.

    not sure what i'll do this time around

    Honest now, Bisco....did you just ignore it when that battery was letting you know....Sort of like when a toddler says Mommy, "I have to go potty," and you figure it can wait....:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

    I carry good sets of jumper cables in all our rigs -- 35-feet 4GA. Sometimes there is no other way to jump a rig except from behind, so the extra length has come in handy a few times. Never used them except to help OTHERS. Hopefully never have to use them in either direction on the Prius.

    I have refused to give jumps from my Prius to regular non-hybrids. The family is known to be $en$itive to e$pen$ive $damage$. A jump box is far safer, and two orders of magnitude cheaper.

    Yes, my concern, also. Except, if I am out somewhere deep in the Siuslaw National Forest and someone needs a boost....lucky it has not happened yet -- in the Prius.

    Not trying to be a jerk....but with my "older relatives," I have noticed they have become much more "risk-adverse" as they age. Seems to me, I WAS going in that direction until the last couple of months. I have now officially been on the hunt for new ways to fail. And, no, I am not normally a country music fan.

    ... it may be far less risky and costly to just give them a ride out to civilization, or at least to a cell phone signal.

    scouts honor, i've been checking the static voltage for a long time. the car gave no warning signs. i started it, and we drove 4 miles to go for a walk. 45 minutes later, it was stone cold dead.

    one thing i've been wondering with the plug in, because it charges the 12v with the hybrid battery, maybe that gave it enough oomph to start in the garage. but it also has to be healthy enough to power up the electronics when you plug in.

    no worries, medicare starts 12/01/19. 65 is the new 75, but i have been risk averse since getting married, 41 years ago.:rolleyes:

    My OEM battery was 12 years old when I replaced it and it still held a charge. It was the original battery from early 2007 and I replaced it in July of 2019. I think the OEM battery is the way to go - my car had 233,500 miles on that 12 volt oem battery.

    Perhaps people owning a hybrid/ plug in vehicle are more educated than those with a noise machine with 4 wheels...

    Other reasons:
    Most car chats have 125 years of built up knowledge so every one knows right and wrong. Only 20 years of Prius knowledge and constant improvement allows more difference of opinion. Especially since a fair amount of the 'normal' 125 years of knowledge is wrong for the Prius.

    Many car chats are all problem solving, where Prius chat is quite a lot of research and development theory. Everyone has a theory that won't work.
