It's interesting how counter-intuitive the hybrid system is. Just look at Volt for an example of how avoiding engine use results in a penalty. Blending done well can be very efficient.
That's good advice for any non plug-in hybrid. Engine use beats EV mode every time for fuel efficiency.
Agreed. One of the reasons I chose a PiP over a Volt was due to the lack of direct engine drive. As a result, the gas powered efficiency really suffers, and that's a big deal if you drive a fair distance for commuting. Of course, there were other reasons as well, but this was important. SPH-L300 ?
One of the screens you can see on the dash is the ratio screen where it will tell you how many miles you've done in each EV and HV. If you reset this for each tank. It is very easy to see how many miles you've done in just HV. You can still plug in and be in this list. Does that make sense?
I usually run through the EV charge and reset the trip odometer every day when the car switches to HV. Also very easy to keep track of HV mpg this way. SPH-L300 ?
It is actually a direct engine drive. The engine speed is controlled by the speed of motor-generator 1, (MG1) and it's never disconnected from the drive-train. When the engine is not needed, MG1 spins in reverse, causing the engine to be at rest, while the rest of the drive-train is at speed. MG2 is used for the "heavy-lifting," to add additional EV power to the drive-train. As MG1 slows down, it causes the engine to turn, and start up. It then keeps the engine running in it's most efficient rpm range, in combination with the electric motors. At speeds over 62 mph, the EV mode is turned off, because of the speed limitations of the electric motors.
Makes sense, only problem is I just never put down how many HV miles it has been. I just have been concerned about EV miles I guess.

Well, considering the lack of actual data since you started the thread on Sunday, I thought you might appreciate the free bumps. This is a discussion thread, not a poll topic, after all...
It does seem counter-intuitive for the gasoline engine to be running much of the time while in HV mode, but that's actually much more efficient than running in EV mode. Since all the energy in a non plug-in hybrid is derived from gasoline, EV mode is quite a wasteful way to consume that energy. No energy conversion process is 100% efficient, therefore there are losses in every step of the way from: engine to generator, to converter, to battery, to inverter, to electric motor and finally to drive-train.
Dude, you haven't even been on this forum a month yet. Don't tell us what threads should and shouldn't be like, or even what you think they are.
Keep in mind that when the engine is spinning, it isn't always consuming gas. Rapid & Frequent fuel-cut is another efficiency gain from HV mode.
I think this forum has had it's full quota of opinions today about who should talk about what and when and how.
