You're way off-base regarding piloting an aircraft. Commercial aircraft have a device called a Traffic Collision Avoidance System which alerts the pilots to the presence of aircraft nearby. This mitigator is in addition to the flight planning in which aircraft file their planned course in order to deconflict with the planned courses of other aircraft.

Plus, commercial aircraft have two pilots to handle the instrumentation and fly. Plus they're generally flying on autopilot so they've got their full attention to dedicate to monitoring the instruments rather than actually having to control the vehicle.

good points. hadn't considered that. But...
    what about older planes?

Is a driver and passenger with a pre planned route using cruise control the same? :p

You knew when you posted your question that you would get posts against driving with TV, despite your disclaimer. The evidence is out there and you know it. This is *not* a hijack of your thread, just comments on your original post and foolishness. Done.

This thread topic is very similar to the "Putting Volvo seats in a Prius" thread. Chris already has enough legitimate comments like this one in the thread so I think he gets the point and similar comments aren't going to change his mind. If you want to discuss it please go to http://priuschat.com/forums/freds-h...ity-watching-tv-while-driving.html#post632724

I agree with most everything said so far, but now I just want to see the results of what Chris is going to do anyway. :)

Yeah guys and gals, use Jack66's link from now on unless your offering 'HOW TO' input for providing a live TV signal to the Ultimate Lockpick3 input.

Think of the PC newbie wanting to do this mod with the most satisfactory safety considerations in mind, now they will have to wade through PAGES of bantering for the few helpful posts. But at least you got your unfounded points across.

Ah yes. "How To" posts on how to illegally modify your vehicle (depending on jurisdiction) to at least annoy people (you were the fellow with the subwoofer, right?), or possibly kill them (story-/news-based content on the MFD, vs "glass cockpit" use of MFD to display instrumentation or maps.)

But as I pointed out in Jack's thread, you obviously believe that your entitlement is more important than others' safety. I only hope to be wrong about the consequences of that belief.

    As for sources...

    Not really.

If you crash with your Volvo seats installed (sans air bags) - only YOU may get hurt. When (and I do me when) you crash because you are watching TV instead of taking the responsibility of driving seriously, innocent people get killed.

    That's a very BIG difference.

You know I did not get any of this crap when I started my thread on my in car PC project. Most of the posts on my thread were helpful. Since its an in car computer I can do just about everything with it. Watch TV, movies, videos, listen to music, play games, surf the web, even reply to posts on priuschat :D and a lot more while driving. So why do people want to fill this thread with crap instead of helping this guy? We are over 100 posts so far and I can count the number of helpful posts on one hand.

    [edit]

To actually try to help chrisspaulding here is what I suggest.

Take your question over to MP3Car.com - Your source for mobile computing solutions! - Home

They might be a little more helpful in you quest to get TV in your car as they have more experience with all kinds of hardware. Just don't mention you want to watch while you drive and you should be OK over there.

Another way is to get one of the DTV converter boxes. They have A/V outputs that will connect directly to the lockpick video in and you will still have a picture after the anolog channels die next year....

A quick and dirty way of doing this is to get an inverter and an old VCR. Most VCRs have a built in tuner and video out. I did this once when some friends and I went on a cross country trip in my old car. We even had a Playstation hooked up. Made the time seem to pass a lot faster. However you probably won't want to drive around all the time with a VCR in the back seat.

If you're willing to spend a little bit more money several manufactures make an automotive tv tuner. My old car had a Sony head unit that I hooked up to a Sony tv tuner. If you go with a setup like you could mount the Sony headunit in the pocket below the existing radio. Then tuner was an external module that had RCA outputs. You could feed those into the Prius audio system. The Sony head unit's only function would be to control the tuner.

    Edit:
It probably would be easier just to add something like these:

I think I saw chris in the legal/moral thread (probably generated based on his crazy idea but for all those who think this is a great idea, regardless of the morality (safety for others but many may not give a crap because they are much better drivers than most) b11101100 (btw, shocked he's giving suggesting for accomplishing this moronic idea) posted this:

DTV in a moving car is going to be a big challenge since the 8VSB modulation used by ATSC works poorly for mobile receivers. COFDM is the modulation you'd want to use for a mobile DTV receiver, but since ATSC was more concerned with stationary receivers, we got 8VSB in the USA.

Not trying to hijack anything, but as a lawyer, I feel compelled to say this: PriusChat is a great resource, but it cannot discuss anything relating to a Prius. For example, you could not have threads about how great stealth mode is for running people over. I feel the moderators are making a big mistake by allowing discussion of illegal activities that could also further lead to large civil lawsuits.

Yeah pretty much. At least that's what I'm thinking too.

    Well said.

And if you're on the highway at 0mph for 10 mins, watching TV is fine is it not? you're stationary and so is everyone around you. I've watched movies while lining up for the border. There's nothing to see other than wait for the car in front to move and watch for kids playing in the park. That's it.

I think the better solution is to just do away with all the lawyers. :bounce:
