Monster Trucks - Revisited

I believe the trucks that should be banned are the MONSTER TRUCKS! The ones that have no reason to be on the road at all! The bumper height is a safety hazard. The headlights are a safety hazard. At least around here they are because these idiots don't know how to adjust them so they don't blind oncoming traffic. And The height alone makes the MONSTER TRUCK susceptible to roll overs which can seriously injure the operator and passengers in the even of a crash. There is no reason that MONSTER TRUCKS should be allowed on public roads unless the driver has some kind of long and expensive training. And even then they should need to have a permit to drive on PUBLIC roads.

I personally have no issue with a lifted truck going down the road. Most of the guys and girls that own them are generally 21 and older. A nice 5" lift with 33" tires suits a truck well for towing and offroadability. I know most guys that would like to have the comination of both options and only have to own one truck. Some own a striclty offroad truck and a tow rig and trailer to move it from place to place.

All lift kits now utilize the stablization system from the factory to reduce body roll in corners. Would I take a lifted truck and take a corner at 70MPH? It probably will handle the corner fine on the highway due to banking and as long as you know how the vehicle reacts it's all good. I know on the Dodge Powerwagon, you have the option to automatically disconnect the sway bars for optimum suspension travel offroad which is a great feature.

Most guys also regear the differentials to regain the power and fuel mileage as well and the 4x4 shops that install these lifts are certified. Heck, you can even do brake upgrades to imporove braking with larger tires. Options galore!

What do people feel about midsized trucks here? I happen to own a 1999 S-10 ZR2 which is a very nice truck for offroad capability but, Not very large unless I were to install a lift. It is my faily driver and it's a 4x4. I like to have it in the winter and i like to use it offroad once and awhile. It's paid for and I get around 16-18MPG. It sure is cheaper than having acar payment with the cost of gas combined. I see myself installing a lift onto it very soon.

Here is a link to some lift laws. Here in MN it's not very specific and not very much enforced. It does say that that bumpers can;t be no more that 25" from the ground to the bottom of the bumper. My stock truck is at 27".

I also have to agree that there is a type of "smugness" amongst people who own a prius. They can't stand to see trucks or SUV's on the road next to them. I personally don't care who drives one of those cars. Whatever fits your needs is your business. The only time I get bothered is when an individual tries to push their phylosophical ideas onto other people which is not right.

I'll tell you what though, I'd buy an old beat to crap Geo Metro thats $1,000, over a $35,000 Prius.

You are kidding me, right? You really think what you pay at the pump is the full cost of providing and burning petroleum?

Here is the short list of how gas/diesel is subsidized:

-Oil industry tax breaks
-Pollution during prodution/refining
-Pollution from burning final product
-Healthcare cost from above pollution
-Uninsured healthcare expenses and loss of productivity due to traffic accidents
-Gas taxes DO NOt pay the full cost of building and maintaining roads & highways
-A large percentage of Law Enforcement costs are associated with traffic control and highway safety.
-Court costs of above law enforcement
-The last two wars for oil
-What percentage of our defense spending and foriegn policy costs are related to securing and protecting our supply of imported oil.

If you do not understand the concept of how your "cheap" gas/diesel is subsidized, then you probably do not understand the concept of climate change either. It really does not matter if you understand it,
but there will be future costs to deal our failure to curb our present uses of fossil fuels. I not ok with that being our childrens' and grandchildrens' problem.
