Even my smallish 55 kWh Model 3 battery weights about 800 lbs. There would need to be a structural analysis, wheels to roof, to see if it would collapse the car after a year or so of pothole pounding.

How much weight would come off with removal of the high pressure hydrogen tanks and the fuel cell (which, by the way has valuable catalytic materials).

Just leave the buffer battery in place for that.
The tanks alone weight over 200 pounds.

When I had a lead on a 2016 Mirai for $3500 I strongly considered replacing my 1982 Comutacar buying a $6000 60kw Chevy Bolt battery, a $200 OEM charger and going through the gauntlet of dealing with the dbag Openinverter resellers and ending up with a unique ~200 mile range conversion.

Also eliminates the car from the current tax schemes since it’s not on Wisconsins fee schedule.

With the advent of $9999 Chevy Bolts it’s not worth it though, unless you really like the Mirais (Lexus hs250s) appearance.

The HS250s (now Lexus LS 2020+) drivetrain is a drop in, fuel system excluded.

Somebody else is already sort of doing that, he is about a decade in now
