I had the upgrade done today on my 2004 Prius. I was the first to be done at my dealer. It seemed to take the service dude a LONG time to figure out how to take the cover plate off of the DVD drive under the driver's seat and pop out the old DVD. I watched him while the "read" the same two pages (mostly pictures with a little text) over and over.... In any event, I had lots of time to look at those same two pages myself. The one thing that caught my eye was the statement that the update DVD for this LSC is version 4.2, specifically. The DVD comes from a special source, not part of the usual parts ordering system. It made me wonder whether or not those who wait until late 2005 will STILL get version 4.2. Only time will tell...

There is clearly a new database compared to my old version, 3.3. I live in a rapidly developing area and all the newer roads in my vicinity had been added. It would appear that the data has been updated within the last 6 months (at least for me)

By the way, I STILL have not received anything in the mail regarding this LSC. My dealer just needed my VIN number to order the DVD.

Yes, time will tell, but Toyota has never been reticent to provide UPDATES to various TSBs and LSCs/SSCs. It wouldn't be at all suprising if in 6 months or so they updated this LSC40J to provide version 4.3 or something instead of 4.2.

My dealer received the DVD (v4.2) by Fedex 2nd Day Air. I didn't catch the return address, but as you said this is not the normal shipping method for Toyota parts.

Sorry to be so local but could anyone with the new DVD v. 4.2 confirm there is a new freeway "CA-56" connecting the I-5 and I-15 in northern San Diego area? It is so close to my house and adding this would change the route guidance to half of my destinations. If not yet added, I would wait another few months or so for v. 4.3, if possible.

    Thanks,

I had the free Nav 4.2 update installed today in my 2004. Here's how it went:

At Hollywood Toyota, the guy said they were busy and to give them an hour. When I got out of the car and was signing my name to the order form, the tech did it. Total installation time... oh, 90 seconds. No charge for parts or labor.

My first test of accuracy was the fact that as I pulled in to the Toyota dealer, the map said that building was ET Nails. But after the update... drum roll... the map said the dealer was Cosmos Audio & Lighting! Oh well.

On the way home I noticed that more POI were accurate -- there was a Post Office on the map that hadn't been there on v3.2 though the P.O. was built in 1934. A lot of POIs were still inaccurate -- restaurants on the map that didn't really exist.

Accuracy of street addresses seemed to be about the same.

Near my home, there was more accuracy in street numbers. I live in the Hollywood Hills which have odd numbering, and in v3.2, some houses that had addresses like 6616 were showing up as 6840. With v4.2 many of those were very close to the actual address. Driving around the block, some areas were off by 20-40.

Overall, an improvement. But despite the upgrade, Bush is still president.

Got mine replaced yesterday. The address table at my in-laws is much more accurate in 4.2 vs. 3.1 in mine as well - but the biggest improvement for me is the complete freeway info for the Phoenix Metro :) That alone was worth the trouble.

I'll try SoCal this weekend when I'm out for the holidays.

I just picked up my Prius yesterday, and according to the "Map DVD" button, I have version 04.2 of the Data, so apparently the new vehicles are arriving with the new DVD.

I got the letter... it was addressed to me, but was a little weird saying if I didn't own the car not to worry about the following message.. like I'd get rid of my Prius.. hmmm

Anyway it had my VIN and said the new NAV upgrade was for '04's and early '05s... mine is an 04 and not sure what an early 05 really is... it said give the dealer a call to set an appointment and it would take about an hour...

:) Service Manager called: "Your DVD is in, call after Thanksgiving for an appointment." Took one week to order (after I had informed them of the FREE UPDATE). I will be updating from Rel. 3.1 to Rel. 4.2 and will post my experiences.

Dealer did NOT require personal inspection of my Prius, or any confirmation that 'I was having problems.'

Anyone else had the dealer tell them they can't order the CD until they have a work order on the car, and apparently they need the car in the shop to do that? I got my letter Monday and called yesterday to make an appt for an oil change and to have the upgrade done. I mentioned to the guy on the phone that the letter said he would need my vin number to order a CD. He told me they couldn't order it until they had my car?????? Then he said when it arrived I could install it myself so I didn't have to bring it back to the shop. I guess that means I get to keep the old one, in case it's better, but it seems like a different story than you all are seeing.

Oh, and by the way, I asked to speak to the Prius tech about a question on my car, he told me the guy's name but said I couldn't talk to him, nor could he return my call. The guy who answered the phone said he could probably answer my question. (I'm guessing it's because I'm female!) I think I'll call another dealer tomorrow and see if I get better results.

I am going to wait until my 15K oil change before getting the DVD update. That should be around Feb/March.

I still have not received the letter. Regardless, my dealer has, ostensibly, already ordered the DVD.

:) NAV DVD update done (Monday 11/29).

Version 4.2 works exactly like 3.1 - so far. I haven't made any extensive excursions but will travel to the "Texas Hill Country" for the Holidays - more sparsely populated. It will be interesting to see if some of the roads and streets are accurately depicted there.

The upgrade was relatively painless, although I had to track down the Svc. Mgr. after a 45- min. wait with no action. He still had the updated DVD on his desk and the Service Writer hadn't tried to find it. The DVD was individually assigned to my VIN number. This 10-minute job required more than 1½ hours. I note that the Dealer gave me the old DVD (ver. 3.1) - I had thought the dealer was supposed to return it to Toyota.

Hmmmm... wonder if the 3.1 DVD would sell on eBay...

I have not seen a letter yet. I did get the dealer follow up letter, but have had no other communication from Toyota. I am beginning to wonder if I am in the data base. I see a few have gotten the letter. I was going to wait to the 10k service. Have any of the brake recall letters gone out, or been received? I am going to go to the dealer today to look into the service manuals and talk to the service manager. I may check into it.

    Read again. Dec. 31, 2005! A year.
I got my letter today and called my dealer (Tampa) and they gave me the runaround and I got tired of being on hold. I had called last week, but they were confused so I decided to wait for the letter. DanMan32 lives about 30 miles from me and got his letter this weekend. (Interesting that we also picked 32 to add to our screen names...)
So I drove to my local Toyota dealer (that never could sell me a Prius and advertised some above sticker), and they took my letter, copied it, ordered the DVD and thought they could call me in a few days. Said I was the first one who would get one and they expected to put them in other models with NAVs.

So much for service from the nice dealer. I'll do it locally, thank you...and save 80 mile drives.

After reading all of your dealer problems, I count myself extremely fortunate to have a great dealership in Allen Toyota of Gulfport, MS. That goes for the General Manager, Sales Manager, Salesman, Finance Manager, Parts Dept., and Service Dept. There is not a run-around specialist, circle-jerker, or butthead in the bunch. They all could not be more friendly and helpful.

Where's a "thumbs-up" emoticon when you need one?
