I thought that might be true. Rechecking the owner's manual reveals that the hybrid system is supposed to be at operating temperature and the check made after wating a few minutes after shutting it down. Hmmm, there will be less oil in the crankcase than when sitting overknigh but there will be more oil volume because of heat expansion. These things may cancel out. I'll have to check cold vs hot.

Stepping aside from the overfill issue for a moment and instead determining the ideal level, it becomes obvious why overnight was required. It was the only way to achieve genuine consistency. That was the original goal.

It was actually a surprising discovery afterward to find just how many had overfill well beyond just that little amount recent usage could skew. (That's 3/8 inch or more.)

My first oil change 2 weeks ago resulted in an overfill of about 3/8th inch on the dip stick (measured after an overnight park). I had noticed my mileage drop off by a couple MPG over this period. I decided to check folowing the group's discussions on the topic.

Today my dealer agreed to check it out and they removed the extra oil. I suspect they'll keep dumping 4 whole quarts in for unsuspecting Prius owners until Toyota issues some sort of service bulletin or they tire of folks like me asking them to re-check their work.

I just had my oil changed, and I checked the level and it is about 1mm below the "full" level. I'll check tomorrow, but so far it doesn't look like they overfilled :)
