Anyone know if there is a way to use a gen 5 (2006 - 2009) NAV DVD in a 2005 Prius? I was given the DVD by a buddy who works in a scrap yard but don't want to screw anything up.

As I recall, the major difference is with the MFD not the DVD reader but the MFD in the car he got is damaged so I can't use it. Any thoughts?

I'm running my backup copy of 6.1 now! :D Hymotion had to fix an issue with my battery and had to take out the Hymotion battery to fix it. In the process the 12v battery was disconnected. This reset everything and I can now run a backup copy of 6.1. Sof if anyone out there had the same issue I had all you have to do to get your older backups working is disconnect the 12v battery.

Now that I have my original 5.1 out of the car I can stat comparing firmware and see if I can find the copy protection. I have a few ideas on what it could be. It could be layer break or it could be reading the DVD info manufacture, type, etc.. I'm not very good at this kind of stuff so it may take a while and I still may not find anything.

I am also looking into making a backup of the nav disk. I attempted to copy my 5.1 disk a few years ago to dvd+r dl disks without success. I now have a copy of an 8.1 disk and will try again.

I believe that both the layer break and OTP vs PTP (opposite vs parallel track paths) on the DL disks may be the issue. As an experiment I will try to delete all of the Canadian and US map region data that I am not using, replace the files with dummies and squeeze the resulting files on to a single layer DVD. I will post the results when I am finished.

Well I replaced all of the regions 1-9 and 11 (everything except Florida's region) with truncated dummy files and had no success. The nav unit is unable to read it...if anyone has the time could you post layer break info from various nav disks...I don't really think Toyota is using the layer break as a copy protection feature as my old gen 4 4.2 disk reads:
    Layer Information:
    Layer 0 Sectors: 1,986,340 (50%)
    Layer 1 Sectors: 1,986,220 (50%)
    which is a typical...

I was thinking it may be reading some of the DVD information like manufacture and model numbers but I don't have an original 8.1 DVD to get that information. This is the only thing I can really think of unless they are able to tell by the reflectivity of the disc or something similar.

I just posted on a simular threat. I have a european Prius 2007. I just moved to the US and I am looking for NAV DVDs that work with my car. I asked Toyota and also tried a view american discs at the Toyota dealer. Is it not possible to just burn the US map data onto a european system disc? Thanks for the help.

Just thought i would give my configuration. It worked first time
    Windows 7 32 bit
    Lenovo t400
    Matshita drive
    used the single link iso
15 pack memorex wallmart dvds $19.99 version
    2005 Prius
I followed instructions on page 4 i think. Imgburn did not recognize my dvd so i just hit okay on that screen but followed the rest of the instructions.
    Used burn rate of 2.4
Probably would have taken about an hour but went to bed and did verify in the morning(the laptop matshita drive opened after completed writing and would not close it self to do a verify. I had to do that manually when i woke up

Thanks very much for the contributors
put dvd in car and works fine
