Low Rolling Resistance replacement tires: Current List

max or near max according to sidewall

 

I thought I'd seen it mentioned somewhere here, but after spending 30 minutes searching around I couldn't find it anywhere...

What's the recommended front/rear tire pressure for the X-Ice2? I bought a set a couple of months ago and plan to have them installed this weekend.

Happy to report first rotation on my Defenders after 5004 miles, that the MPG difference is +0.2 over the original stock tires with previous life time of 49.9MPG. Considering all the variables of travel from traffic, schedule, road conditions, temp, weather, baro, ect.., my read is that unless one was to get outright anal with the analysis process, that's still a 50MPG tire for me. The biggest difference noticed is the quieter ride and greatly improved handling as compared to the stock Yokos. With the 90K lifetime to still be determined, no significant wear has been noted thus far. I feel more than delighted at this time with my decision to purchase these tires.

Knowing this crowd as I do, feel free to use this opinion or not, agree or disagree, or what-ever you want to your hearts content. This however is my honest assessment of the Defenders.

 

We have Michelin X-Ice2 installed on our 2012 Prius v and are overall are very satisfied with the tire. After an initial break-in period (~200 or so miles) the tires are now very quiet and comfortable. When compared to the stock Toyos I haven't noticed any difference in ride comfort/quality. Additionally, we are averaging the same mpgs with the Michelins as we did with the Toyos. I have the Michelins inflated to 40psi each.

Just got my Prius last month from a gas guzzling ml350 and could not be any more happier with this car!

just from reading the post and a lot of dated post, I know that every once in a while you slap on your 17's (Bling).

I have 17" wheels coming in the mail, Just wondering what tires you have on your 17's and if you were to buy new tires which would you buy today and recommend. leaning towards the ep422's 215/45/17. I know 17" lowers MPG and i'm ok with that for now, but want to at least get a great LRR to somewhat minimize the impact of the bigger wheel.

I am not an expert on tires but since i was searching for tires as well some time ago, my suggestion would be getting a Michelin Primacy MXM4 in your size.... That should be the best tire for 17" size in my opinion.

 

Hi F8L, is there a difference other than just looks and accurate speedometer differences between 205/50/17 and 215/45/17. I really like the way the 205/50/17 looks, but would be so happy if they do better with rolling and MPG than the 215/45's... so what I'm trying to get out please tell me the 205/50's would be better for me, Thanks!

 

Thanks lefteye, I really appreciate it.. yeah those tires where on my list as well, but in the earlier posts I read a lot of people saying that they dropped an avg of 4-6mpg with them compared to theyre OEM... I'm hoping to just drop 6mpg when i put the new 17's wheels on

Hi thanks for the advise just got the new wheels setup, but just wondering if this particular set up 205/50/17 is accepted by Toyota, and if there is any way that they might use this as an excuse to void my warranty

lol, that mind trick doesn't work for me, but the sounds of the prius have made me drive slower than my last car when not on cruise control

I did look again at this on my last tank, and I have a little over 30K miles on the tires. The head unit that reads gps indicated 1.8% more miles than my trip odometer. I'm sure this varies with brand and mileage. My speedometer reads correct at most normal speeds, but read 85 mph when gps indicated 86 mph.

I would rather have an accurate speedometer and better looks. I agree that the 215/45s will juice your mpg if you don't adjust for them. Theoretically the 205 versus the 215 should slightly reduce rolling resistance and reduce the contact patch. The choice of tire will have more of an affect though. Rim choice will also change coefficient of drag.
