Only thing I will say is this. Get the Michelin Energy Saver A/S if you are running the 15" rim. Otherwise choose the Ecopia 422

Thanks again Ron. The Michelin Energy Savers are almost twice as expensive significantly more expensive, so they're not really in the same class of tire. (Probably they're still worth it.)

I'm still trying to gain more insight into the Yokohama Avid Ascends. I know people here love the Ecopia 422's, but these Yokohamas are rated higher on Tire Rack for most everything (except maybe wet traction), while being slightly less expensive. That said, they're not nearly as popular; many fewer reviews. So... what am I missing?

I just got 4 Michelin Energy Saver A/S P195/65R15 at BJ's Wholesale club. Paid $449.96 installed with a $70 off instant manufacturers coupon. I thought it was a great deal so I wanted to share.

Did the same at costco for 500 out the door. 185/65/15 energy savers. What a difference compared to my last 3 sets of tires.

I have put four sets of these on over the last month and love them! 800 tread wear rating is unheard of. Price is fantastic and they ride smooth and quiet. One of the cars I put them on had a generic tires on it previously and I averaged 48.1 MPG and now average 53.3 over about 200 miles. Not scientific but there was definitely an improvement. I didn't drive the other cars.

    Just got a set of 4 Energy Saver A/S for 416 OTD @ American Tire Depot. They're having a Buy 3 Get 1 Free July 4th Sale. I got 195/65R15's with 42 front/40 rear. Upgrading from 3 Integritys and 1 Primacy MXV4.

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of Continential tires. My understanding and I am sure will get a different reply. Tire mfg statements about LRR tires are just that statements therefore comparison task on tire to tire is selling them , inventory available and quality control roll down test.

Updated the list a little with more test links and info in the PureContact and Pirelli P7.

The Energy Saver A/S is still the top mpg tire. if you can find them....

I would avoid the Acends. There are better tires out there.

In UK/Europe Continental now have a new tyre "A" rated for fuel economy and "B" rated for wet grip. It is called the Continental E contact.
The highest rated Pirelle I can find is the Cinturato P1 Verde rated "B B". The highest rated P7 is "C B"

Anyone try the new Continental TrueContact yet? I put a set on my van, and it is decent. More grip, much quieter (even than Michelins), and looks like it gets better mpg. The only thing I do not like is the more bumpy ride on the highway.

I have a set of Yokohama Avid Ascends on my 2010 Prius ll . They are quiet, Handle very well, get good wet traction, and good gas mileage. Side wall max psi is 51. I run 40 front 38 rear. People with no experience of having them on their car bash them a lot on here.

Yokohama rarely runs discount rebates like Michelin and Bridgestone regularly do. So the price difference between the popular tires is quite small. With the $60 rebate currently available on the Yokohama tires it makes one rethink the mpg savings with the more expensive though not twice the price Energy Saber A/S. It's a personal choice.

You must always look at overall long term pricing when making suggestions for tires. Freak sales are just a snapshot in time.

If your post is directed at me, keep in mind I ran the Ascend tires for nearly 11k miles before I returned them. They are not a bad tire by any means. But because there are better tires for nearly the same price (generally) I don't recommend them. If you catch a great sale, however. ... :)

I have put at least 10 sets of the Yokohama Avid Ascend tires on in the last 6 months.

    Great price
    Great warranty
    Great tread wear rating
    They look nice
    Smooth and quiet ride
    No customer complaints

I don't have any long term data yet but I am very happy with this tire so far.

I just ordered the TrueContacts from TireRack for the Prius...I noticed one person made a negative comment on Tire Rack about bumpy at high speeds...I don't know who made the comment, but now I can take a wild guess! But I 'm approaching 100k miles on my rear GY ComforTred tires so I am hoping it can be quieter than those are now.

LRR tires seem to get noise with age for some reason. H

I hope it works well for you since the Prius is a noise box on highways on wrong set of shoes.

I have some miles on my van. I still need to check the PSI to be sure, but I can feel the bumpy feeling that guy is talking about. It seems as if tires are not perfectly circular. Not major bump, but certainly you can feel it on high speed. So I will have to play with PSI and if it still an issue, I might have to talk to TireRack to see if they can send a new set.

But in terms of quietness. This is so much more quiet than the Michelins MXV4 I got rid of. And that is top of the line touring tires.

I recently was told that my tires are in need of replacement, after having a dealership appraise its value because I almost bought a Volt :D I have a set of off brand tires the last owner installed right before I bought it at 50k miles. Now they are getting real close to the wear bars (Ive rotated them once in 50k miles - why bother? They are loud, not LRR, and cheapos!).

So I come seeing the main question... what is the best LRR tire? I browsed through a few pages on this thread and now have a slight eye ache, lol.

I always thought Ecopia held the trophy but I keep seeing mention of Avids and Michelins?! I have a set of winter tires, so snow/ice traction isnt a main concern. My biggest concern is the best tire for MPG's.

Temperature plays a big part of it, if you are doing summer/winter split that far north I'd say Energy Saver A/S for the summer tire. If you lived further south the answer might be different.

"Summer" summer only tires would be a bad choice that far north as they would do poorly for unexpected shifts in weather unless you plan on running your winter tire in the spring/fall and barely using the summer tire which is backwards from normal winter tire use.

Both "summer" and "all-season" tires will get worse MPG when the temps get too low, just each brand/style tire has a different range when it is too cold for them to be soft enough to roll easily.

The arguments about which tire is better get more complicated down south where it's warmer and true "summer tire" use can be extended. I don't think you have to worry about the "summer" versions making the decision hard.
