LKA (lane keeping assistant)

    Tunnel vision. Multiply that by a couple of million cars on the road and that failure would occur about once every 15 minutes.
    Hopefully YOU won't be in the way when it happens to someone else.

    But there are a couple hundred million drivers out there. So once the system is built out to the whole fleet, the failures should happen, on average, every 15 to 30 seconds.

    The reliability is going to need several more '9's.

    LKA is not like other safety features where you can't test the system. While I don't use it on a daily bases, I do use it frequently on long road trips. Every time I turn the system on, I test both LKA and LDW on both left and right lane dividers. I have not had any failures where the system tracks the lanes but failed to warn me that I've drifted out of lane. LKA and LDW tracks you from drifting out of lane. It can't help you if someone drives into your lane. When it does happen, it's not LKA's fault. Are you going to blame the system for what it's not designed to do? Is it the best system? No, it's not. I do think the system is above average according to some of reviews of other vahicles. I also think it could be improved on such as automatically follows the curve.

    I will blame the driver if they miss seeing the oncoming car because LKA lulls then into paying less attention.

    Many of our highways have glue and grinder remnants of past lane markers (construction zones, diversions, new alignments, etc) very plainly visible, equal or more visible than the correct current markers in certain precipitation and lighting conditions. Because of those impairments, I cannot imagine how any current LKA - LDW system could possibly achieve 99.9% success here in Western Washington. Even I cannot do that, and must use other cues to determine where to guide the vehicle.

    You guys are saying like everyone who owns cars with LKA completely relys on it to keep the cars in the lane. That's just ridicules and not true. If the LKA camera can't pick up the lanes, then don't use it. Simple as that. It was never advertised as autonomous in any way. It will not drive for you. It's only meant to use on freeways with minimal curves, not recommended on undivided highway but works, not recommended on city streets but also works if above 35mph, and certainly not down Lombard Street. After using it for over 4 years, I know it's limitations. I know what it will work on and what it won't work. The driver is still 100% in control.

    You know, I bet when cruise control first arrived on the market, there were tons of people like you and say what if you set the cruise control and it approaches a slower car, it's going to rear end the car. They never thought, hey, you can just apply the brake and CC will cancel out. My point is you don't know how LKA and LDW work until you actually drive one and live with one. Sure, some system are better than the other. However, we're talking about the Prius's system which most likely work the same as the Lexus system.

    I actually like the little beep that goes along with this system (which I have never used in a Toyota).
    I don't really like Ford's implementation of the LDA or the blind spot detector as neither has an audible warning.
    Now......my wife who likes to doze while I am driving might not agree with my opinion.

    Don't be ridiculous. We haven't been saying that everyone will do so.

    But some fraction not only will, but appears to already being do so. Examples have already popped up in other threads and news articles. One thread came from someone relying on LKA in the drowsy overnight hours. Outside reports criticized pre-collision braking for not being sufficiently autonomous. And plenty of drivers are already devoting so much of their attention to their mobile devices that fully autonomous vehicles may be the only 'cure'.

    Then what's the argument here then? LKA is here to stay. If you don't want it, don't buy it. If the government forces it on you, turn it off or disable it and don't use it. If you're worry about it failing, it's a good thing that the system can safely tested at anytime unlike the airbags. Arguing online about what a fraction of people will use it improperly is useless. We all know not to drink and drive, yet people will do it. Are you going to argue about it online? Are you going to go to every bar and every party and picket?

    Autonomous vehicle can't get here soon enough. It may not be want you wan but it's what a lot of people want. Once Tesla updates their firmware to fully enable autopilot, people will use it for ridiculous reasons and post videos online. There will plenty of people like you to make useless comments about the video. There's already plenty of heated discussion about Tesla P85D beating a Hellcat.

    I'm not complaining about being forced to use it. My concern is about consumer expectations about the currently deployed technology getting ahead of its actual capabilities, becoming complacent and endangering everyone others on the highway. The articles you linked, and various threads here and elsewhere, strongly suggest that this is happening with LDW.

    The article catric linked and all the links I posted are reporting from the same source. They're not of different studies.
    The reason I posted all those different links is because the article catric linked has very little information. I simply linked the original article with way more facts. The fact is that the study was done on passive lane departure warnings on Buicks and Mercedes and the collision increases were not statistically significant. Here's another well known example, Hummer is greener than a Prius. There are many articles reporting that a Hummer is greener than a Prius. If anyone bother to read the article, they'll know that the source of the article came from CNW Marketing Research "From Dust to Dust"

    Consumer expectations will always be higher than actual capabilities. It doesn't matter what the technology is. LDW is getting a bad rap due to the poor implementations from those auto makers because they want to get the product to market as quickly as possible. A properly implemented LKA like the ones on the Prius works as expected. OP knows it. That's why she wants it.

    True that. After my 3 months using LKA, I thought it was the best thing since...GPS. I don't use cruise control, never grew to like it. But driving Philadelphia to Virginia or to S.Dakota, YES to LKA. My dealer has me on speed dial for a trade-in, now that I am more informed and less hasty. I may even wait for 2016 colors, though no great expectations Prius will get adventurous there.

    I actually find the LKA hard to use when you are "alert". There should be no need for this if you are not texting/dozing while driving. What I hate about the system is when there are absolutely no cars around you and you attempt to make a lane change without indicating.......the car will fight you to keep you in the lane.

    I have a 2015 Prius v Wagon with ATP. One of the features is Lane Departure Alert (LDA). Does anyone know if the warning alert can be make louder? It is OK when driving with the radio off or low volume... but if I am listening to audio moderately loud... it is hard to hear the LDA over the music.
