It’s not even accurate for the original nimh battery either. When dash shows 2 bars, actual battery is around 40% Or if it shows all bars, hv SOC is around 80% so that may not be an important issue to Toyota when designing the SOC gauge

These inaccurate measurements are common with less expensive / older technology... When I rebuild battery packs my cheap gear can tell me the amount of amp-hours it pumps into the pack but it does terrible at telling me how much of that is lost to heat and how much of that actually got stored into the module. So I suspect technology in the early 2000's in Gen2 Prius has a similar problem? Anyone with a Gen4 Prius get more accurate SOC readings?

We once had a dude from Pakistan on here who was convinced his battery pack he rebuilt wasn't completely fixed because the SOC reading was bad so I explained to him the reason to ignore it and pay attention to the other readings instead... Though still more to learn in that regard...

I re read it. It and a few other pistd regarding cooling is one of the reasons why I asked the question. Does their implementation of Lipo have any updates on ECU for 3rd Gen?

Hell no on Lipo, it's powerful and affordable but too dangerous. That's why I switched to LTO and LifePO4 only, safety first even if it cost more. also, no ECU reprogram required @Soh

Believe me button is overrated :)

I have aftermarket temperature sensors probe directly to the battery cells on all my modified Prius, the temperature sensing from stock location has a small delay due to the heat transfer through the case, that's what I have been doing/testing for the past few years guys!

At 35C Isn't that high for lithium iron? I Assume nexcell is using some kind of nano technology to achieve higher C rates? If I drag race at every start how will that affect the cycle life?

Not really it gets hotter than that in the summer in northern Wisconsin

Low temperatures are a much greater risk

We've tested reasonable below freezing temps this winter with Nexcell test packs in western most states and everything works great, but when it comes to extreme mid-west style temps of sub-zero, that's not been tested yet. Or maybe I'm mistaken?

I’ve seen a real -40F here in Wisconsin during my lifetime (not windchill) gotta wonder if you could damage operating frozen.

Lipo temp specs are getting better both high and low. Do some spec checks.
But yeah, real low temps personally bothers me too. That's one big reason I used DrPrius to monitor them.

Primes dash thermometer blinks for 5 seconds at or below 37 F after going into Ready or On mode.
Wish I knew exactly why Toyota chose 37 F.

lipo batteries are typically in cell phones and laptops, they are only good up to 200 charge cycles

Probably to warn of the potential for ice on bridges. BMWs do the same thing.

BattleBorn (brand name) LiFiPo 12 volt 35 minutes of Lab setup for testing and too much data to process in that much time, unless not really caring much about how the stuff works. ymmv
