It is these newer EV car companies that are adding EREVs, though some started with them. Most of the traditional car companies have offered PHEVs for some time. Of the top five EV sellers there, I think Tesla is the only one that is just BEVs.

PHEVs have been growing faster than BEVs in China for the past couple years. One in three plug ins last year was a PHEV. BYD is a powerhouse, but they aren't the only one selling them.

2023 data from china says 25% bev, 12% phev - PHEVs grew from 1.2% market share in 2020 quickly because of low priced phev models and changes to Chinese incentives.

 

You take one of the larger Chinese EV makers and throw them in with the rest??

Its not going to happen, byd needs to comply with US safety and environmental regulations to sell here. It will be a more expensive vehicle. BYD already has a plant in mexico, I would expect a north american plant not exports from china, but yes it will be a lot more expensive, and I doubt they want to deal with the US emissions regulations so it would be bevs.

These price Wars are reminiscent of Microsoft driving companies like word perfect & Netscape Navigator out of business. This is why Tesla keeps millions & millions in cash reserves. Let the bloody noses & war of attrition begin. The Legacy automakers are ill-prepared for the EV battle

If it was gm and toyota then it would be like that.

BYD and Tesla are relative new comers to automotive, and kia/hyundai only became big in the last 3 decades. Tesla and BYD are trying to grow the market and with costs coming down they are dropping prices. This is more like the smart phone transition, and companies like gm and toyota can learn from mistakes black berry and nokia made to allow apple and samsung to grab so much of the market. Hyundai/kia seems to have learned some of the leasons and is working hard to have major plug in market share in a decade. My hope with the change in the executive suite Toyota is getting there too. GM should probably buy motors and controllers and software.

Grid utilization is in its worst condition in California where they import most of their electricity. And yet .....
The grid is underutilized during night time & often utility companies will give you a better / cheaper rate for night time charging. Funny how few utility users worry about that 240v clothes dryer, oven, cooktop, central AC. Noooo - it's only Gloom & doom hand ringing over car charging. A pathetically weak excuses tho, is better than none - one would suppose. Never mind that many people charge their cars off rooftop solar with another large part of plug-in car owners planning to add solar

Which grid and where did you read that? If its about california they need to add more wind and smart grid charging. If its in places with lots of electric heat, that means they need to transition away.

 

the whole country, on average, new york times a week or so ago. the article was referencing the switch to heat pumps and mini splits.
they grid operators have no intention of upgrading anything without federal funds, imo.

 

there are many forces opposing the switch to ev's. some overt, some covert. mostly out of greed or ignorance. the latest is auto union workers and biden is beholden to them, at least until the election is over.

 

Xcel out here in MN has been upgrading for years.
Currently they are finishing rolling out smart meters for everyone.
They have been closing coal plants, building solar and wind farms.

I don’t know how quickly they have been upgrading transmission lines.

Local votes matter! Our PUC has been very effective and non-political.
I don’t know how that happens, but applaud the people responsible for keeping it that way.

In Colorado and New Mexico I can drive on any winter tire I want all year, including studded.
