perfect setting for rooftop solar, and would probably keep the car cooler as well.

Lugging a few gallons of water to my car everyday would be tiresome...cost of freezing several bottles (around 9 16oz) is negligible. Placing the bottles in a cooler also eliminates the leaking risk.

This is one of the nuttiest treads ever. Does filling the bathtub in your house cool down anything? I didn't think so.

The battery is made to withstand heat from the sun

one would assume toyota tested the setup extensively before offering the prius worldwide/

    Don''t worry about it.
    You live where you live.
And the battery will probably easily surpass warranty.
    And if not?
    You get a new one.

actually, toyota did a poor job of protecting the battery from heat buildup in the car when parked in the sun all day. if hot climate states had 10/150 warranty, toyota would be replacing a lot more batteries.

There's no real data to suggest the hv battery are damaged/weakened by heat. From whatever information we have on this site, the failures are random and are all over the country, regardless of weather conditions. Patrick Wong has his 2004 in Arizona with extreme heat, and it's still working as it should after 12 years

A house has a ton more volume... Better analogy is to compare a car to a Refrigerator, if you have more stuff in your fridge, it does a better job retaining the cold and runs more efficiently. A car's volume is small, a temporary "fridge" to last a day parked in the heat, could keep it cooled.

Batteries cost money :( I've calculated if the battery last at least 12 years, I can save roughly half the cost of the car, and more with each passing year...so just interested in testing this at the moment.

Southern California can get pretty hot...but I wonder how humidity affects the battery, as Dallas gets both hot and extremely humid

Eh, there's always outliers and unusually good yields for batteries, and terribly bad ones that fail in 6 years... The randomness has people taking precautions based on anecdotal observations, probably where most believe hot weather has something to do with it. I'll most likely get bored with my experiment, but right now I'm still in my paranoid/curious new owner phase...

Sucks to carry 10 years of paranoia with you.....but I guess you have to do what you've gotta do.

We'd all be better drivers if we're more paranoid, never know when a Truck will run that red light and barrel into you.

That's just called defensive driving. Paranoia is a thought process believed to be heavily influenced by anxiety or fear, often to the point of delusion and irrationality

Tint the windows and get a windshield sunscreen (they sell em on the Prius chat shop. FYI)

Kinda makes a lot more sense and will work a whole heck of a lot better than your swamp cooler idea. Just sayin.;) Plus a big cooler full of Ice will melt thus causing more humidity and dampness to the inside of your car...!

There's a fine line between vigilance and paranoia, it's a spectrum we all must walk, and if you want to see the hysteria these forums can whip up, just read the threads on when to change the automatic transmission fluids...

Again, it's ice bottles, reducing that risk. I'm getting solar windshield tint next week, will help for driving, and can't always be bothered to put up the windshield cover everytime for short trips.

Hysteria - exaggerated or uncontrollable emotion or excitement, especially among a group of people. In terms of transaxle fluid change, are you in support of it or against the fluid change?

Shoot, Man... I feel I'm taking a big gamble not changing it at 5,000 Miles, per Bob Wilson's recommendation  I'm nearly at 20K miles, so next test is at the 30K interval or wait till 60K...decisions, decisions, may have to read that 31 page thread again.... I don't buy the "lifetime" transaxle fluid, though.

Wow I really feel for you man.....but the amount of paranoia/hysteria you have in your life, I would just stick to the manufacturers recommendations on the car and stay off the internet. It's much easier following a set guide from Toyota than to read random postings from people on Priuschat.

    +1.

    Priuses aren't emerging technology.
They've been building them and selling them and driving them in TX for a long time now.....like 15 years.

Everybody always flops and twitches over a $2400 battery when they're fairly easy to replace (they're connerctoized for this purpose) and they seem to be lasting for >10 years in most applications.
Besides....they sell Priuses in AZ, NM, and SoCAL by the butt-ton, and some of those places get even warmer than TX.

I would never own a car that was so fragile that I had to waste scads of energy cooling down ice over, and I suspect that you don't own such a car either.

    Good Luck!

Changing transaxle fluid is one time i part company with Toyota.

And in general: the way their maintenance message changes, 'round the globe, I don't think their prime concern is the well being of MY car, lol.

if you have room in your freezer, it's actually more efficient to fill it with water bottles.

Well, I'd recommend doing the math. I haven't, but experience tells me your ice bottles will have less than 1% impact on the temperature.
I wouldn't bother. But if it makes you happy..... ;)
