Latest Software Update Safety Recall Resulting in 8mpg less...

So every model year Prius has to provide EPA mileage numbers. By now, the software fix has been in the car for years:

So if your patched Prius is now under performing, trade it in on a new one that is immune to what you think has occurred. I am right there with you Chris...Had update 2 weeks ago and have dropped to 36 mpg on a good trip. Tires at 40+ and no other changes in driving....what gives? The mid-sized Hyundai get 35 these days...

 

Yeap, you ought to sell that Lemon Prius right away and get a "mid-sized Hyundai." Then you can join:

Maybe the update is problem prone, ie: it's ok for some, but something goes wrong with the people experiencing a marked drop. I've had no drop, in fact a slight improvement due to apparent increase in the ease for the car to slip into EV. But this has got to be frustrating for someone on the other side of the coin. If there are two sides.

my first two cars were Hyundai Accent and Tiburon ...
the weal point was their transmission. I heard that less transmission current models.
the good point at my past time, Hyundai was cheap!! with all features included.
If I need to buy Korean car ... KIA is a good choice, which price is less than Hyundai!.

If someone wants a different car, then go get one. Sell or trade-in the Prius and find the car of your dreams. That is OK. You don't have to make-up some unsubstantiated claim about a Prius repair.

The chart I published earlier was generated from a new 2010 Prius driven directly off the dealer lot:

Protocol:

• Verify the car is mechanically correct
  • wheel alignment
  • fresh oil and filter change
  • correct tire inflation
• Warm-up the car for 20 minutes - use to check the test route
  • try to run around 70F +/- 10F, dry
• Find a 10 mile or longer, level stretch that you can use cruise control to hold a set speed
  • Accelerate to test speed; set cruise control, and; reset trip meter
  • Memorize or record the MPG after 10 miles before setting up the opposite run
  • Make two passes, opposite directions
  • Average the results of both passes

Now I've done things to make our car more efficient:

• different tires, Sumitomo T4s
  • indicated = actual MPG
• four transaxle oil changes
• multiple engine oil and filter changes
• patched with all known updates
• Alabama summer temperatures

Well I have some spare time this evening and it would only take a little time to run 60, 65, 70, and 75 mph. Might as well get'er done.

Both benchmarks are well within experimental error and match the May 2009, off the dealer lot, numbers.

The advocates of a 'patch' impact need to provide a specific protocol to replicate their mileage performance. A good place to start is to fill out the questionare.
