I think that could be an option but im sure there are fees for installation of a monitoring system just for EV charging/ garage outlet. This TOU plan allows 7.17 cents per kWh for the entire household. I do plan to eventually go off the grid and go solar but that will have to wait.

I just checked in my area, and it seems that the offer is $4.95 meter rental per month in exchange for a 9pm to 9am off-peak rate of 3.3 cents per kWh.

That means about 8 off-peak charges a month will result in a break-even.

Typically the sub meter is all that is required.
With your future plans though, the whole house TOU does sound like a better deal.

In PG&E land, they let you install a second panel and electric meter to get the low power rate. For the privilege, it will cost you about $10,000. I can't imagine this makes economic sense to anyone. It's like shopping at Costco. You can go broke saving money.

    What a rip off!
One of the larger utilities here has a similar setup.
New panel and meter. Typical cost in MN is about $1000.
Still not worth in in most cases.

Funny thing is, almost no one is signing up for it, and the company wants people to.
Word is they are looking at changing it to a simple submeter like all the other utilities.

On residential homes "panel fees" should be more or less illegal. Or worst case 100amp residential service is X dollars regardless of panel config.

A single meter is easily capable of logging power vrs time of use and solar power should be allowed to just "turn the meter back"
Especially in the states where the meter fee for solar always exceeds the monetary benefit of the panels

    All a fricken racket.

Only future option to avoid BS will be electrically off grid but attached to gas for NG fuel cell backup power.

If I ever build a house, the only grid power will be natural gas.

Right, because we know the equipment, installation and maintenance all cost nothing.

And don't forget that meter costs nothing.

    It's called "net metering".

Not sure where that is. The meter fee here is $4.95 a month.

Oh, you'll have plenty of "BS" with that approach as well. You'll get to see what it costs to maintain equipment and how much equipment you have to own and support to have reliable power.

    Good luck with that.

    At most!

Already today, the initial and ongoing costs of connecting to the grid covers passivHaus building and the use of heat pumps and battery storage. It really becomes apparent if you want to live in a rural area with inexpensive land. In the near future electronics will integrate and optimize home energy uses and then it will be a no-brainer.

I think you fail to understand the history and reasons why the electrical utility used to be apart of the public trust and thus was to be provided with certain things subsidized and paid for by the utility instead of the customer directly.

    MILBANK CL200 200A E-Z READ W-HR METER | Gordon Electric Supply, Inc.

It costs about $43, as compared to the thousand or so it can cost in MN or even Wisconsin if you want to do something the utility doesn't want to be bothered with.

And at that, my house I rent which has 30 AMP SERVICE!!!!!!! has the original meter on it!!!

My folks house is from 1975 and also has the original meter

In Minnesota if you discount the installation fee, net metering is about $50 per month more, add to that the electricity you send back is paid back at the distribution cost, very very different than just taking it off the top eh?

We used to be at that rate about 15 years ago but then something fraudulent happened

    ERF - Public Comments

per court recorded testimony the republican controlled review board that controls utility activities allowed unnecessary building projects to occur to inflate my former $6-10 a month electric bill to what it is today.
(AKA the utility could only expand profits legally by building unnecessary power plants per the charter)

So Great for you but for me to just have a utility connection I pay about $45 in random fees and that is before I use any energy.

Many others here are in the same boat.

I already own most of the equipment anyway because I have owned and driven antique electric cars for decades.

Also I only use about 10kwhr or less in the summer per month, I have modified my behavior and appliances and am fully ready to be solar powered as soon as I find a reasonable property to do so.

In the winter I use about 70kwhr but if I were to have the ability to get a different type of furnace (passive for example) I could drop that down almost to my summer levels.

And I am doing all this is an ancient dive rental house.

FPL here in Miami is hikes their price in Jan, July twice the same year . I think they are trying to get ready for the plug in. They just build a new plant. They ask us for funding for cheaper electricity and now they going up. Lol We are moron!!!

Utility rate hikes are because the utilities have become used to expanding profits every year, despite lower energy use.

The reality is the review boards have to stand against this crap but instead have become part of the problem
