Kayaks on a Gen III (No Solar)

Thank you. We live in a place where we are one mile from a small sound which connects to an ocean. There's a state park island with no bridges or roads right across a short sound. I want to be able to get to there. I don't think putting the boat inside the car is an option, since I have a wife and a six-year-old.
One of my friends today had recommended an inflatable kayak. Since my objectives are simple and I don't want to take up too much garage space, this might be a good place to start. Thanks folks, stay green!
