Remember the commercial: You can pay me now (less cost, minor repair) or later (more cost, major repair)?

They could advertise, and then explain why it's important to do it. And show proof...
But I doubt any will do it. Most places want the higher paying job.

I am the person beyond that 1% of owners you mentioned, and I faithfully service my Prius without negligence. There is no mention, or any requirement from Toyota that the EGR has to be cleaned in regular intervals. In fact, Toyota is well aware of this fault in engine design. When the engine knocks, it'd only lasts 5-10 seconds and it never generates a code. If it did, I'd have taken it back to the dealer for service. I had mentioned to the service supervisor before about this knocking but the reply was when there is no code, there was nothing they can do. The explanation was when there is no code, they wouldn't know where to start the repair. (And it makes sense too.)
Due to this experience, I am very reluctant now to buy another Prius or other Toyota
vehicle. In my opinion, Toyota should consider offering at least a few hundred dollars as incentive to keep customer staying with the brand.

They don't care! Each brand looses and gains at various times.
The Gen4 seem to have fixed that problem. At least what I've read on Prius chat.
I might have missed it but no one has written about cleaning the Gen$ Cooler...
It's no big deal to me. If it wasn't that, it would be something else for a different car.

A lot of cars develop unique faults over time, and that is to a certain extent why a lot of us join forums such as this. I used to drive a FTO where amongst other things the roof rusted right through unless you ripped out the lining, scraped a load of adhesive off, and treated it. My S2000- timing chain tensioner clicking, and wheel axle nuts needed torquing up beyond factory settings otherwise the bearings would go. The early ones also burn oil even from low miles and I was forever topping mine up. The EGR cooler seems to be the Prius achilles heel, but in fairness there isn't much else that crops up. Maybe the Gen 4 will develop one or two quirks over the coming years.
