Rental cars can be fun to whip. Just gotta know how to do it without leaving any marks.

or um, so I have read...

I turned in the rented Malibu early this morning flew a few thousand miles and rented a Ford Escape. I really dislike it. I didn't much care for the earlier generation and this one is much worse. It will get me around, but I miss the Malibu.

I think I did 600 miles in that Chevy, much more than usual for a gig. It's one of 2 GM cars I genuinely like.

    Too bad they're discontinuing both.

I think I missed my window- corporate doesn't allow us to sign out EVs anymore, and on top of that I sure don't see as many in the rental lots as I did 6 months ago.

On paper I like the Bolt EV. But they'll be gone (and the used ones likely too aged) by the time we are ready to let our Prius go.

hertz has sold a lot of their ev's and are still selling them. i'm told they are all stripped models though.
'22 bolts with around 10k are priced very well, especially after the 4k tax credit.
i'm not suggesting to buy one, but they are fun to drive and well made.
chevy did an amazing job imo, considering i boycotted them for 40 years after my last fiasco with a celebrity.

Mine too. Looks like jdenenberg maybe was typing quickly, and somehow tucked the 1 behind the 8 and 6.

Only 40 years? Near as I can tell, nobody in my family has ever bought a GM car, ever. I don't think it's an actual boycott or anything like that, it just worked out that way.

If I see an opportunity to drive one I'll try it.

Yup. A little closer to 6 on this occasion. It was kind of a dark amber color.

From this post and others I take it you had a decent road trip lately.

My wife took our daughter out to visit family in the midwest. I got the Mazda all shined up to send them on a good trip, including putting a new set of premium tires on it.

So naturally they hit a road hazard and ruined an 8-day old tire.

Somehow they got the attention of a passer-by who was of a mind to volunteer some help.

The guy tried to lift the car with the included jack and couldn't do it. He apparently tried to jack it up by the rocker panel, and when that didn't work, tried to jack it up by the floor pan. Another try on something else down there- basically everywhere except the reinforced rail edge where the jack was meant to fit, with a form-fitting shoe on the jack and all.

Somehow they wound up at a tire shop at 5:59pm on a Sunday, where they bought the only tire available in that size. It was round and black and it got them home. If it had any other qualities, I didn't notice.

They got back okay, almost on time, and if the worst of it was an unexpected $600 expense and a bent rocker panel I can deal.

    How was your trip?

In a 2021 rented Prius (thru turo), battery died. AAA takes their super sweet time & an hour later nothing had happened. Found one of the local shopkeepers with jumpers & after traveling some 20 miles from the strip mall - AAA texted & said they're on their way. Nothing I like better than talking to AAA voice prompts (other than getting hung up on during the 1st call) instead of humans - when you're sitting in a hot dead car.

It's got a pretty good shimmy at about 25 mph that feels like a front dry spindle. Reporting it to the owner will be my parting shot

    Just an aside.

My father liked to tell the story of renting a car from Hertz. A 1995 Chevy Lumina IIRC. He started out on a fairly empty highway near the airport, realizing the steering wheel needed adjustment. He reached into the steering wheel stalk and -- whoops -- he shifted into reverse at 60 mph. The car came to an immediate stop and totally shutdown-- as he said -- a solid immediate dead stop.

He found the steering wheel adjustment lever, adjusted that, Put the car in park and it started right back up.

No problems on his 1,200 mile rental from Portland, OR to Northern California and back.

Anti environmental plastic coffee pods (k-cups) ... (vs making a whole pot & chilling it for later & grounds put into the compost pile). They're working on perfecting pods that don't take 100 years to break down , & maybe some are on the market now. Convenience, liking it as much as the next person, but ...

Yeah, why measure coffee with a scoop, when you can buy pre-scooped coffee.

With our old-school melitta system, i really wish you could buy just the fragile glass carafe; that’s the one thing we occasionally need to replace. We have all these extra:

    Coffee scoops
    Carafe handles and bands
    Lids
    Filter cones
    Wire trivets

Can't you just put the cone on top of any suitable container?
