To wire the backup camera you need to pull all of the panels in the inside hatchback. (The panels on hatchback glass area) The one at the back of the hatch comes off first. You will see a rubber hose with wires running through it at the top of inside hatchback. Run your wires through there then along down the side of the hatch.

You will also need to unbolt the rear trim panel above license plate. This is the piece you will mount your camera to. It unbolts from inside.

You also need to remove the plastic panels on the inside of the cargo area on the left side so you can get at backup light wiring so you can tap in.

Gotcha, thanks for the tip! It seems every part of that car comes off plug and play, and luckily I managed to not break anything yet.

My hangup is trying to get through the back seat. I think I'm just going to go through the seat fold, which should keep the cable hidden, even if its not totally obscured.

Update: I believe I didn't plug in the very long plastic panel that contains the airbag/seatbelt lights and fan directors. The car might be registering this as a problem with the airbag, so I have to check it out. I'll have to remove everything for that so I'm not doing it until the next time I need to open it. Anyway I'm sure thats the airbag problem.

I'm loving the Din. I wish the software was less buggy and worked as intended, but what does work is super feature rich. I'm putting a modded xbox1 under the passenger seat to plug into the system's aux soon, which is one of the main reasons I got this.

I emailed the seller with questions on upgrading software, using their music player (playlists, random etc) and winCE questions. I'd love to find some winCE homebrew to add to this thing.

I am using a shoddy piece of cardboard instead of a trim since I'm not going to buy the $130 trim on ebay any time soon. Looks ugly, but it'll protect everything, and I don't care about looks much anyway.

rrolff, Frenchie - Thanks for all the damn good advice!

Here is where I mounted my nav antenna. 3m double sided tape keeps it snug. Hardly noticeable.

Keep in mind - there is almost no chance of finding an aftermarket trim that is cheap. There is no reason for a company to make one. The ones coming out will be specifically designed to fit a 180x100 2din - you have a 200x100 2din. So you must buy the trim at some point...

I bought a video switcher (with remote) Manufacturer: DYNEX
    Mfg Item Number:
    DX-CVS4 - Ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350254319357&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT . Cost was $12.50 delivered - it allows A/V switching for 3 sources, can be remote mounted. Then you can add DTV , and a PS3.... It runs on 12VDC too....

Yep, that's what I ended up doing. Its exposed, but who cares.

rrolff - I know that there isn't any place to buy it now, but I'm still going to wait until dash kits become available and compare prices.

Has anyone tried to utilize the stock gps antenna that is supposedly wired down to the center console by the drivers seat?

There is no GPS Antenna, neither cable for a backup camera in any prius without the nav option.

I strongly recommend you getting OEM dash. I just got one from UK toyota dealer through ebay just like some of us here and it matches perfectly with the rest of the dash. fYou do not tell a single difference between them in terms of texture, color, pattern, etc. It is hand down best quality dask kit I have seen so far. I doubt any aftermarket dashkit will be even close to this one.
That beihg said, I have to get also fill in kit from Metra since my head unit is Alpine W505 but in your case you only need OEM dash kit. I do not see any reson for you to wait for aftermarket dash kit.
Life is short, enjoy when you can!

I will just add again - you can wait for the cows to come home - *all* the dash kits being made are very specific for 180mm x 100mm devices. You have a 200mm x 100mm - none of the coming kits will fit your stereo. The kits from the UK fit it - you have no choice - and there is no future plastic to fit a 200 x 100 device.

As Snowy says - buy it and enjoy - as you can see form the pics, it looks nice, and just snaps in...

Maybe order something else too - to lower shipping costs (they'll ship other stuff for fee in the same shipment) - mud flaps? Center caps for the wheels? Maybe even a UK air freshener (they have a pub smell version - or so I was told)...

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice. I'll probably just end up buying it.

on another topic: igo8 kinda sucks. gonna look around for something better. I always liked the navigon software on my handheld gps system. I figure anything that works with wince should work for this system.

Update: So I logged a ton of hours with this GPS unit. I managed to hack WinCE into running by default and launching an awesome free program packaged called MioPocket:
GpsPasSion Forums - MioPocket 3.0 (Unlock for PNAs)
This program handles all your app needs. It can launch your GPS software, media players, editors, games, etc. Looks nice too! Highly recommended for any WinCE System.

I've encountered a problem which may prove to be impassible. It appears WinCE and all navigation software (including the media players that come with the nav software accessible from the nav screen) run in a hardware layer that cannot access everything on the device. In perticular, the winCE layer cannot access :
    the 2nd SD Card Slot,
the USB port (Which I use to play music off of, rather handy),
    the Bluetooth Com,
    video input/aux.

So while this device has excellent hardware and is quite moddable, I cannot seem to be able to access the hardware layer for any of the mentioned devices.

I noticed rrolff sent his device back due to AM/FM Bugs. How is that working out? Are they going to fix those problems and return it to you?

What email can I use to contact their tech support directly? All I have is [email protected]

If this hardware layer can be accessed by WinCE, then this device has massive potential. (Example: Tethering via bluetooth to a wifi connection for internet.)

The OS Is WinCE 6.0 with roughly 128mb ram. There is about 100mb on the flash for installing programs directly onto the nand memory, but the memory does not appear to be persistent. Probably a protection against accidentally bricking your PNA.

Hrmmmm - and I thought it was running 5.0 with 64MB. Funny thing - iGo has a text to voice app that is only supposed to work with 128MB (memory hog), and when I tested (briefly) it didn't work, so I gave up - this s encouraging... With CE6.0, we can run Garmin (though I'm still playing with iGo)

For support, we have none. The aftersales mail is pointless... I do have the MFG info - i'll forward that to you. Last I tried, it was very hard to get anything from them...

They are supposed to ship the unit back in the next day or two...

Here's a great site for a competing product that has decent modding and support. Eonon Forum

I believe all these MFGs use the same basic design (they buy the GPS, and integrate it into a base WinCE system with ports). I'm sure most is accessible by WinCE, Eonon may help with that clue... Eonon has some issues - which is why I didn't go that route.

    Check your PM...

I believe that many of these companies are not manufacturing the HU's but reselling the same product. Eonon looks to be just another trader.

Just to point out again. Chinese HU are made from two separate pieces of hardware. A embeded WinCE subsystem running GPS software and a separate proprietary HW+SW/FW for other functions. It is a reason why WinCE could not orchestrate with both SD slots for example.

There must be over a hundred posts on changing or installing nav sys. It is all overwhelming. I am looking to get a backup camera system, maybe a combo indash GPS/Backup camera video.
I am confused, I hear gen III, Gen II.
I have a US 2010 model III is that a GEN III ? Mine has blutooth buttons on the stering wheel.
From numerous posts it sounds like the wiring in mine may be different. Do the HD units just plug into model III like the model II? I don't want to cut a bunch of wires and give the dealers any excuses for charging me for repairs. The dealers seem to try to blame any modification for unrelated failures.

    Barn,

There is a 'bus' that the steering functions run on. I do not have the steering buttons for Bluetooth - but I'm pretty sure they run on the same bus as the volume/mode/etc. Most HUs allow you to program the signals. You choose the function (like volume up), press that button, then press the program button on the HU.

So no wiring... I do wish I could add that bluetooth button to my Prius...

I knew it! Damn, that dashes my hopes for using winCE to do anything. What a shame.

I wonder if that proprietary media layer can be messed with at all :(

They said it shipped, but then haven't heard back in days....... With good customer service, they could probably move a bunch (with SW fixed)...
