    Bonjour
Regarding the Pioneer's boot-up time, I do not have the same result:

    • Radio
    • Backup cam
    are operationnal within 3 seconds.

    IPOD around 10 sec

    GPS after 35 secs.

Phone : ? no idea, but anyway less than 2 min.

My model is F10BT (this is the european Z110BT)

I wonder if that is true for the lower models like the 4100DVD? One of the main reasons for me is the backup cam.

Shawn, what Pioneer model where you referring to?

Re: Just installed JVC NAV/DVD Head Unit and backup camera

The JVC is good, backup camera operational in about 3 sec. HD radio operational in about the same time. Music stored SD Card operational 10 sec. GPS operational as soon as the radio turns on and this fastest I have seen on a GPS nav unit.

Wow, was going to wait a little before my upgrade but it seems like the pioneer and jvc are good enough for me to upgrade right away.

opinions on JVC versus pioneer on sound quality and ipod integration. I want to browse my music fast, but can do that from my ipod if the controls on the head unit are slow. I will be using blue tooth phone, but don't care that much about that, I can put in a blue tooth headset and have privacy. The back up camera and gps are a bonus.

    Thanks
    Ed

Re: Just installed JVC NAV/DVD Head Unit and backup camera

I think the Pioneer I saw was in fact the Z110BT. I was at an installers talking about different HU's and he showed me a car they were working on and he started the unit up and it was about 30 seconds until the backup camera kicked in. Perhaps there was an extra accessory installed I didn't know about. It certainly was a lot longer than 3 seconds. Not a huge deal for me if i really liked the unit but sometimes someone is waiting for a space or I need to get going and that would be annoying. Of course I could just do without the backup camera one time but with the visibility out the back so limited and I'd be in a hurry...not a good combination.

Anyone know about Eclipse? I was looking at the AVN726E which looks pretty good and had some good comments around the Net.

Most models (although) they say "new" look to have come out about a year ago. I wonder if there will be any new models beginning in 2010. By then I'm sure there will be install kits available. I want to drive my car a bit before I install anyway.

I looked at the Eclipse and I like there screen and they have good detailed mapping but the unit looked at had slow start up and the GPS will not say street names and even the cheapest portable units will do that.

Not sure how the Pioneer and JVC work - but many keep the GPS on a flash stick - which allows you to run different softwares (by iGO, Navigon, Garmin etc) - this gives a lot of flexibility on the GPS side...

I've seen more about the JVC KW-NX7000BT which looks good. There's a defeat for video when the parking brake is set but I assume an installer could bypass that.

Yes, the jvc has slot that is covered up with two screws and it says SD card navigation so it appears the JVC has the flexibility to run different GPS software also.

If this is a truth HUs should use Windows Mobile OS. I didn't find proof of that on their web pages nor Microsoft logo on the unit what is a must by law. Could some owner say more about it?

Should? Even the Dash Express used Linux, so there other options. Some chip-level OS's require stickers on the boards as per the royalty agreement. Is there a user group for the JVC?

+2, I am actually surprised someone likes windows mobile OS. As long as embedded systems go, MS is not a dominant leader yet.

I believe there is a huge Windows effort running in this space - I know if you're running Mobile, there is a Garmin version of software out there - same for WinCE6...

MS put together a package specific to this space - this includes tuner interface, DVD, GPS interface etc etc. Some MFG are modifying that (starting with Win stuff, and changing/adding functionality) - then compiling into CE4 or CE5. This allows a big advantage bringing new HUs to market.

WinCE is very cheap to license ($4 ish), and has all the functionality you would need for a HU. Mobile adds a *whole lot* specific to the cellular space - but you also end up paying for dumb little things like a TCP/IP stack etc. Mobile is more of a computer for the cellular world - If I remember correctly, a Mobile OS with features (DVD, TCP etc) could run you in the $30 range.

I'd be surprised to see these guys running Mobile. Linux or CE makes sense.

On the Nav side, you need to find packages that match your current setup (compiled to your OS). These software packages are amazingly advanced, feature rich and are very flexible when it comes to tweaking...

Where a large company can come up with yearly map updates, smaller guys can get the quarterly map updates.

A few support "skins" which allows you to edit and change the default screen, or add silly functions like a 3D car with a shadow...

If you have a SD interface, you likely can mod your Nav...

Edit: Here's a nice piece on JVC - they run WinCE 5.0, and their own interface. They also run Navigon (which BTW is very flexible and customizable) - I believe others have swapped it for TomTom of iGo. Omgili WebToolbar - GpsPasSion Forums - how to unlock JVC KV-PX701 PNA device

Some are running custom .exe software - you basically have a small PC...

I do not get the whole Book thing - I guess MS put it in the basic shell (ability to put downloaded books on the screen) - who reads a book on that small screen???????

Seems you guys have many mods that can be done in front of your computer

When/if anyone gets to modding, do your research. You will also need to get the correct display interface core version (800x480, 400x240 etc).

Backup your SD before playing, and note its name - better to play with 2 SDs - keep the original, and play with a different one...

Re: Just installed JVC NAV/DVD Head Unit and backup camera

I believe in the 'package OS' space Windows (CE/Mobile/XPe) now has a slight lead over Linux. That said, there are many reasons to go either way. Linux costs much more than MS on the development side (of course that depends on what you are building), but long term saves via OS royalties (as long as you can stay away from Mobile/XPe - and their piece meal price per feature).

    That oughta do it!

Can someone give us an idea of how hard this is to install. I'm good with wire and solder, resistors, voltage, etc. Not so good at figuring out how pieces of dash board plastic come off. :D

Is there a lot of ind depth knowledge required, or are the instructions paint-by-number?

Right now I'm looking at the JVC or a portable (Nuvi 1690 or similar).

The current version of Microsoft Auto 4.0, based on WinCe6.2 Embeded, promises 1s boot to radio function and 5s first apllication available time, which sounds very reasonable. But I'm not familiar with any device on the market using this SW platform.

Let me know when you install it. I'll come by to watch/help. :)

Or maybe we can both do it?

Make sure the unit is new not refurbished. Unless you are OK with that.
