Just filled up with new Mobil "Synergy" gasoline

    Mine likes to scare the crap out of me with "check hybrid system", for everything, probably even low washer fluid. :rolleyes:

    I always fill up with whats cheapest, usually Cumberland Farms and add 4 Ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil

    Is the PWR mode in Prius Gen 4 persistent? Like you don't need to toggle it every time you turn on the car?

    I use Chevron Techron every 5000 miles. Just for fun ;)

    Great MPG of OP! Did you hyper-inflate your tires?

    Yes, it stays in whatever drive mode you select. It won't change during on/off cycles.
    My tires are only 3 to 4 lbs over.
    No way to tell if the Synergy gas is the reason for the improvement in mpg. But I do hope it lives up to the claims of cleaning the engine well.

    My MPG is nothing compared to some of the Gen4 hyper-mile experts. I'm still in the minor leagues. :LOL:
    I pretty much just drive my Prius like a normal car, and mostly in the city.

    My main ODO mpg is holding steady at 64.7. That an improvement over the 60.1 that I was stuck at in the "Pre-Synergy" days. (Yeah, I know, I'm still in the minor leagues. But that's doing normal driving, no hyper, AC on, and staying in PWR mode. I'm smiling all the way to the bank.)

    My "Trip-A" full tank refill mpg, is staying between 62.7 and 64.8, depending on how impatient I am in my driving. Have no idea if the Synergy gas helps, or if it's because I quit buying Big Mac's. ;)

    Considering that Techron is gasoline mixed with 400 parts per million PEA (polyetheramine); I've got to say it could thin the oil if added to the crankcase. When added to the fuel system, I don't think it would thin the oil any worse than gas from any pump.

    Lol, yup I've got the let's see how many miles I can squeeze out of this drop of fuel bug myself. 65? Wth, are you driving downhill? I've just been using regular gas from Costco running in normal mode trying not to piss anyone off and get fuel economy and I'm at a steady 52. I think I'll try your approach with regards to the power mode on my next tank, I know if I went to premium I'd get better but I want to vet the cheap gas first.

    it doesn't have to, the gen 2 didn't. but it is nice in that we all get a choice. you have your power, and i have been in eco since april 27, 2012.:cool:

    and it's not actually tension, just pedal travel. i have to push it further to keep up with the yugo in front of me.

    I went with the pedal travel that felt most linear: Normal. In ECO I found I repeatedly needed to really tromp to get a reaction, it got old.

    I always try to accelerate smoothly and steadily. But all that extra pedal travel (in Eco mode) was giving me worse gas mileage. The gas engine stayed on longer while getting up to speed.

    Look at all the money Toyota could save (and WE could save as buyers) if they would simplify things, and eliminate those two extra unnecessary drive modes. Just make the gas pedal "normal" and leave it at that. Make the gas pedal travel/response like any other Toyota car.

    (but then Toyota would lose their gimmicky "Eco" marketing campaign, etc.)

    Agreed. I hated it after I only had the car for 2 weeks. I couldn't figure out "what's wrong with this weird gas pedal???"

    Hi bisco. In my Gen4, the gas pedal definitely feels harder to "push." (And also has further travel as you mentioned.) The tension and the pressure on the pedal is definitely higher in Eco, than in the other modes.
    When I first used PWR mode, I barely touched the pedal and I was thrown back in the seat! :LOL: It no longer does that, or maybe I am just accustomed to it.

    Sometimes I will change drive modes on the fly… when I'm going about 40mph, and you can definitely feel the tension on the gas pedal change. Have you driven a Gen4 bisco? You might have fun if you go rent one.

    i would definitely have fun. i could be wrong about the tension, only what i've read. as i said, i've never tried power, and 'normal' doesn't suit me.:oops:

    Power is good if you deal with impatient drivers as I do up here, but on city streets I keep it in normal and for afternoon bumper to bumper on the way home (creep and beep) I'll put it in eco as long as traffic is moving slow. The problem with power is it's too easy to kick the gas engine on, so I avoid it when I can without causing road rage.

    I always stay in ECO and only use PWR when im at a nasty intersection where people don't let you cross and i need the touchy pedal to get through. PWR mode is WAY too touchy for me. I prefer the gradual pedal feel of ECO 99% of the time.

    Once I got accustomed to the PWR mode, the gas pedal felt no different than my Camry. I want my Prius to feel like I'm driving a Corvette. Now it does. :LOL:

    My gas pedal became less "touchy" the more I used the PWR mode. Now I don't even notice it.
    I drive smoothly, normally, yet briskly, and my gas mileage has increased. I have fun and enjoy better mpg! WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE? I'm old, but I'm not dead!

    The Prius is a great car, but I don't want to be a fuddy-duddy driver....

    Think outside the box. :D

    And try the great "Mobil Synergy" gas. :)

    Another fill-up with Mobil Synergy gas. I drove this entire tank in the ECO mode.

    603 miles driven. (Still had one full bar remaining on the gas gauge.)
    Put in 9.8 gallons.
    Trip-A display showed 62.4mpg.
    Calculated was 61.5.

    Just driving normally. No hyper-mile. Above the speed limit, trying to get away from the tailgaters. :LOL: I'm very happy with the consistent mpg. The display and calculated were very close. If I had pulled out the nozzle at the first click, the calculated mpg would have exceeded the display! But I always squeeze in another buck of gas.

    My mpg is pretty near the same in Eco, Normal, or PWR. I've learned how to manipulate the gas pedal in each different mode. It's been a fun car to drive so far. Even with all the various quirks and oddities and unusual sounds. :D
