Jumper cables hooked backwards!

    In that case the diode's cathode could be permanently mounted to the 12V+ terminal on the battery with the diode anode hanging in the air as the jump point.

    +1, at worst you cook a - at most - $25 packaged item. I would imagine Toyota would build a certain profit margin into the diode protection package
