I think I just decided to go for one of the last 2011s. Last thing I want is a noise that sounds (to My Bride, the prospective driver) like a maintenance issue.
Some thoughts. For those happy about, or worried about the fact that the VPNS seems very quiet and unobtrusive? Perhaps it is neither? Perhaps it IS the system working exactly as it has been designed. And what I mean by that, is I was under the impression it has been designed to be highly directional. It's been designed to be heard if the vehicle is moving directly toward an individual. Therefore maybe it isn't too quiet, maybe it's just working as it should. Either inside the vehicle or standing to the side, or behind? I wouldn't expect it to be loud or noticeable. I suspect the entire reality of what a VPNS means will become incredibly evident once the 2012's fully arrive and more and more owners simply have them. But I am wondering if the perceived audible level isn't significantly directional.
Based on my limited exposure, it appears to be directional. Much louder if you're in front, a just barely audible from the side.
