It happened. Flat tire. No spare.

I am thinking getting this tire for my Prime. Goodyear's Moss-Filled Tires Are Here to Save the Environment

 

How you get all the flats??? In my 24 years of driving, I experienced only 1 flat tire and that was in 1990s where there's no TPMS. All the cars I've owned, I removed the spare tire and all the jacks and wrenches to save weight.

Nail would usually result in slow leak so the TPMS would kick in or through regular pressure checks.

I guess that Florida has all those nails for us to get flats with?! Har, har. They've saved a few for us out here in Socal, as evidenced by my 2, nail-induced adventures here during my first few months of Prime ownership! Yowwch!!

I drove from CA to Nevada and back with a spare tire. Never had to use it but it was one huge thing I didn't have to worry about. But then when I got back to CA, my tire was completely flat due to a screw and I had to use the spare.

 

Luckily I didn't need to use the stowed donut tire on my 2,700 miles to Florida and back. Felt good that it was there, though. What I did see was a ton of drivers changing tires on the sides of the roads, or waiting for help because they couldn't change a tire. Flats happen.

 

Not sure if this is any help to anyone, but doughnut spares can usually be had at a dealership for free. Just look where they throw all the old tires or look near the detail shop. Guaranteed they have a few sitting around which the guys would love to just get out of their way. I say this because we usually ended up tossing them in a dumpster if nobody took them.

Also - for what it's worth. A Honda Civic rim will generally fit a Toyota. Had a Civic "steely" rim on my Yaris after I hit a log laying in the road at 55mph. Totally destroyed 2 rims instantly. But the Civic "steely's" were a perfect fit. (We pounded the other rim back into shape enough to where it would balance).

So be sure to check any Honda dealership as well.

 

Check the tire condition and age. Ten years since the tire's been manufacturered, I'd pass.

Some may, a lot don't: different bolt circle, lug nut seat style, hub opening.

 

I bought a full at Les Schwab and yes it fits in the cargo area behind the passenger seat if you lay it down.

 

A problem is that if someone crashes into you that loose tire becomes an unguided missile inside your car. There's no good way to lash it down that I've seen. A compact spare behind a front seat might be OK if you can spare the room.

 

I had heavy-duty steel "D" rings installed in my trunk for a cargo net. The two rear ones (near the bumper) were expensive (around $250, IIRC) because my installer had to take the bumper off and drill holes for them. However, the two front ones (near the back seat, circled in yellow in the attached photo) mounted very quickly and easily with bolts because there are caps there that you can pull out that hide already-threaded holes.

So, for the price of a couple of "D" rings and bolts, you can have two very sturdy attachment points. You could run a cable or chain through them and through a spare tire, and I think that would secure it very well. You could even use a separate cable to attach the spare to each side, which would be even stronger.

 

Would it be possible to stand the tire up and lash it to the back seat utilizing the child seat attach points on the back of the seats? I've utilized those attach points on a few occasions to lash down some RC airplane equipment for the ride home. Seems to work pretty well for what I've used it for.

 

Putting in another word for plug kit and mini-compressor. Fixed a flat on our other car with self-sealing (didn't) tires in less time that it would have taken to put on a spare. And much cheaper. Plugged our Prius tire on the Alaskan Highway last year and no loss of air since. Also carry Gorilla Glue and assortment of large diameter screws if the hole would be too large for a standard plug. That would be a temporary fix! I am also aware that a blowout or sidewall damage would cause some of the hassles and costs others talk about above.

 

HaHa - now there's an idea! I've not seen the big screw/glue trick in a long while. You grow up on a farm like me? Because that's an old timers trick.
