I see what you guys are saying; but I've given up on trying to explain to people - why buying a salvage car isn't a good idea. They never understand the potential safety and maintenance issues involved. I've even seen black electrical tape covering warning lamps on an instrument cluster. :( Bottom-line, buyer beware....

@rjpaker, your correct. While junkyard parts will cost less than 1K; It's the labor cost that's going to exceed the blue book value of the car. I don't know of any reputable shop that will do it for less than that, and stand behind their work. The other problem is the traction battery pack; batteries don't like taking "jolts" like that. There's a good chance they've lost a few borderline cells after that hit. That's why I stated it was totaled.

FWIW: we have a shop in town that buys "totalled" cars wholesale, fixes them up, sells them relatively cheap w/ a 1 year 100% warranty... and they've been great cars for many. HOWEVER: their minimum requirements include: air bags never went off, no serious damage. It's amazing how many people simply don't want the hassle of repairing relatively minor accident issues... resulting in good deals on rather nice used "totalled" cars. ;)
