Your kidding right? It has an entire Tesla designed drive train, battery pack, inverter and motor. Theres a reason why they want them to stay in CA, thats where Tesla is and the expetise of the designers, and they also don't want to spend a lot of money training the thousands of Toyota dealers nationwide on how to deal with the new RAV4EV, since they are only making 2,600 of them in 3 years. You can see the training cost on this would be huge, there are more Toyota dealers than RAV4EVs they are going to produce :)

oh, i'm not suggesting that they train all the dealers nationwide. my point was that the likelihood that you'll need service at all is pretty slim.

Slim but not zero. Say they allow you to buy one and you ship it accross the country, to the east coast.
Something goes wrong with the drive train (which is basically the inverter and motor), they have no one within 3,000 miles to service it... Even though in theory the "Tesla Service centers" being opened nationwide could most likely fix it, Toyota hasn't set that deal up with Tesla (I think they should, as it would allow them a nationwide rollout of the RAV4EV at least in the 13 CARB states), but that's not how Toyota thinks or operates. Also it's rumored they are either breaking even or losing money on each one sold, so they have zero incentive to mfr more or roll it out in wider distribution.
