Is the top mark really "too full" on the oil dipstick?

OK, so I changed oil in (3) gen 2s today. Drove each for about 15 minutes, backed up to the garage, set ramps in front of car and pulled straight up onto the ramps. Driveway is slightly downslope from garage, so car is now pretty level. Drain the oil and remove the filter. Let the oil continue to drip for another 5 minutes while I was pre-filling the oil filter. How much oil do you think is actually going to come out of the engine if I were to let it drip for 12 hours? If it were drastically important to wait 12 hours to check oil level, then why does the pan effectively stop dripping after about 15 minutes? Answer: It's not important. When you shut off the engine, by the time you pop the hood, get a rag or paper towel, open the hood, pull the dipstick, wipe it off, re-insert it and then pull it to check it, 99.9% of the oil is in the pan. You're not measuring a dipstick with a set of micrometers. We are over complicating the heck out of this.

 

So having the oil at midpoint of dipstick, adding roughly another one quart is safe?

 

So lessee: 1.6/2? Nope. Well it’s maybe “safe”, by that 1/4” overshoot allowance lol.

 

When I do oil and filter changes, I prefill the filter and add about 3 quarts to the engine. I start the car and let it go through it's start cycle. once the engine turns off, I power off the car. Check the oil level and add as needed to put level at the top dot. Although I've done many dozens of Gen 2 oil changes, I couldn't accurately tell you how much I add because I use 5 quart containers and don't pay close attention to exact container levels. What I pay attention to is the final level.

 

3.7 US quarts is about right.

While draining the oil, I will remove the jack stand on the right front (passenger) side of the car; then jack up the rear center jacking point to get more oil out of the crankcase.

the dipstick doesn't care what you use to measure the amount you put in... that's why it has two dots.
