No, you are right, I am not this chat's financial manager and do not intend to become so!. But I do have the right to share my opinion, being or not relevant for your beliefs. I think sometimes people get upset because they hear what they don't want to. If my thoughts and comments does not apply to any of you, why should you care?

Remember, the OP question was "is the NAV worth 1.8K?" and I did nothing more then address why I think it is not!
Like my father used to say "the larger and fresher a wound is, the more it hurts when you touch it"

If the car thief already stole your car, what good would your address be to him? And wouldn't a creative thief also know how to find your real address with your license plate# and VIN#? Just say'in. :)

If you absolutely want a in-dash GPS navigation system then go ahead, if you think a hand held would be more suitable or if you already have one stick with that.

Doesn't your car registration (which should be in your glove box) have your address on it anyway? I guess some people might have it registered to a difference address... but I doubt that most do.

I disagree. I say built-ins are a waste of money compared to portables; this is a fact that has nothing to do with any other's people situation like you implied. I was just addressing the OP main question. The OP was arguing whether or not spending 1,8K in the Prius NAV would be a better choice than getting a portable, and I just laid down the facts: it is a financial waste no matter how much you like your NAV and no matter how you do the math.

Now, once again, like I said before, some "wastes" are tolerated depending on what people want. Not my business and it is not my indention to advise, criticize, or interfere with how people spend their money.

I personally like the convenience of built-ins, but if I were to "invest” in one compared to my Garmin, I wanted it to have outstanding quality. This is the only way I can justify the extra cost, which is again a “waste of money" for my needs. But fact is the NAV in the Prius is not of good quality. Once again, I know some people are happy with theirs, but product satisfaction depends a lot on your standard of quality. To me there is enough evidence to argue against the Prius NAV quality. There is a whole bunch of posts dedicated to point out its problems in here and somewhere else. I tested it myself during my test drive, just for a few minutes, and was very disappointed.

So, bottom line, I believe I am not doing any harm in just expressing my opinion over the real facts, but so much for this NAV issue already...

    Cheers...

I bought a 2004 without Nav and later regretted it. The portable unit kept falling off when driving, the screen was relatively small, and then my car got broken into and the GPS stolen. So I ordered my Gen III with Nav. The benefits are convenience, larger screen, flexibility -- like being able to search a street I'm on or mark the spot where I am -- and the huge Points-of-Interest database.
As for the pain in the buttocks, you overcome this by using voice commands when driving.
As for always returning to the map, it's easy to go to Setup and turn off this default.
So, in short, I believe it's worth the price.

Has anyone in this thread pointed out the obvious that no daily driver is an investment? Any car used for transportation is an expense, and given that, every feature is a potential waste of money. Whether a given feature is "worth it" is entirely up to the whims and priorities of a given driver. For example, the farmer who only drives his pickup on the farm might say "Airbags are a waste of money. I never go over 10 mph, and I only drive on my farm. Why do I need airbags?" In this case the farmer is correct. The city driver who commutes to work would have a different take on airbags.

The same thing is true for GPS systems. The price for built-in systems is a total rip, but I am willing to pay it because I like the seamless integration and the large screen, and that amount of money isn't a big issue for me. Another buyer will arrive at the opposite conclusion, but it doesn't make either of us wrong.

We can list the pros and cons, and calculate the price difference, but anything more than that is like arguing over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

Agree 100% but you pointed out the obvious. I think most people know that built-in NAV systems are a rip financially when compared to portables, but what people in the fence is looking for is more specific information about the quality of the Prius NAV, so they can leverage it with their needs and make their best decision.

I was looking forward to messing around with the NAV's screen for some time. I'm not as much interested in the navigation function itself but rather what I could do with the screen. I ordered my 2010 w/o nav because I would have had to wait around 2 months to get one with. Since then, I've been looking at some DVD receivers/head units with built in NAV. Any thoughts on those?

I just sold mine from my previous car and I miss it greatly.
I'm almost certain that I'll end up putting another one into my 2010 Prius. It has built in Garmin nav (not DVD based), DVD player, a good looking iPod interface, USB input, satellite ready, reverse cam ready, and more.

I don't keep that in my glove box. I street park and feel funny about leaving it there. I keep that and my insurance card on my person!

Actually, I just totaled my 2007 trim 5, and the insurance company paid out an additional $2000 (on to their orriginal offering of $22600) after learning what the additional NAV plus its extras added in value. Of course, I'm not suggesting anyone confirm this by getting in an accident!
My husband is much like you...taking the opposing side in ANY discussion just to get a rise out of people.....a lot of discussions have stopped cold after his input.

No nav system is worth $1800. Nor is it worth it to pay an additional $1800 on top of that for a solar panel that turns on a fan and gives you a view... but people will pay for it if they want it. Who are we to judge?

Probably not. But I bought it anyway. Is an economy car costing $30,000 an oxymoron ???

People on PC are too sensitive in reading the comments and too insensitive in making them. Opinions are like A#$holes. Everyone has one. We should strive to state our personal opinions in a way that doesn't say "What an idiot you must be for not agreeing with me".

I agree with this comment, and put most of the blame on confrontational tone and belligerent attitudes. What could be a simple difference in opinion becomes a major battle.

On the other hand, there is a difference between opinion and fact. Often we see someone stating an opinion as a fact. While people are entitled to form opinions, facts remain facts regardless of whether you like them. Yelling and screaming doesn't change a bad opinion into a fact.
