According to Toyota: Toyota USA Newsroom | Third Generation Toyota Prius is World's Best-Selling Hybrid

    "Midsize Room and Five-Door Versatility

With its 50-MPG fuel economy rating, Prius is the most fuel-efficient passenger car available in the U.S. today. Prius offers its stellar fuel economy in a versatile five-passenger package that is recognized as a midsize car by the EPA. "

Is this Toyota marketing? No "economy car" mentioned. Macmaster05...where are you?

    Honda Accord > Toyota Camry

    IMO

The Accord is a great vehicle for what it is, in its class or box, or whatever.

I'm working, Wth are you doing?

You're right the Prius is a midsize car, not an economy car. So I guess you win.

There's a new category called Green Cars in automotive industry, so I think the Prius is neither an economy car, luxury car, or anything in between. Midsize refers to its size capacity too. A Camry and Accord is a midsize but they're still economy cars.

Ok...i can understand that. Is it even a real classification?

But, why did macmaster bring this topic to this thread? I thought that my title was pretty clear.

Nope...being green is blue apparently, according to car manufacturers! :D

Thinking of Blue, the new Elantra would be super cool as a hybrid. Same coefficient of drag as the Prius, killer looks, it'd be good competition in my books :) What else would be nice would be for Toyota to paint the Gen III in that green color the Gen II's have ;)

I think that Hyundai already has a Prius fighter in the works...so, Toyota better watch out!

by that definition, 99.99% of the world wont ride in Prius either, so all they will know is that Prius is 23k-35k car, and I guess it depends where you live if it is Econobox or not.

Here in Europe, Prius is 35k car and nobody would dream of calling it econobox. Stripped Yaris is econobox.

Definition of what is econobox in the eyes of people is price... nothing else. It is not the leather, or quiet interior or soft plastics... it is price.

As far as I'm concerned, a Prius isn't an econobox. For me, that term conjurs up the image of something like the Aveo. If it can be had for less than 15k new, that would be an econobox to me. Generally speaking, something bare-bones and would be considered the most basic of horseless-carriage locomotion to get you from point A to point B... that's an econobox.

Of the two cars I currently own (a 2011 Prius II and a 2011 Scion xB ) I would say my Scion is much closer to being an econobox. There's more road noise, the ride isn't as comfortable, the car has no special technology, and is pretty utilitarian in design. Still, the build quality is excellent and at least it has some style (some people don't like the Scion style, but to each their own), so I still have trouble calling it an econobox.

I do know a thing or two about owning vehicles on both ends of the spectrum too, so I don't think I'm uninformed about this topic. I've owned everything from an old Honda Civic that had no power anything and had no A/C, all the way up to a 57k 2006 Infiniti M45... so I have a good sense as to what an econobox is, and what a luxury car is. The Prius is definitely no econobox... not a luxury car either, but rests somewhere in between based on options/packages.

I am sitting back...and?? Watch you act like a spoiled little boy? Sure, good job BTW.

    :focus:

Feel free to actually stay on topic this time...and back up what you write instead of making stupid comments!

Interesting opinions and feelings going on here. In 1996 I bought a brand new Jeep Cherokee XJ for $15,990. It had a 4 cyl engine, 4x4, no power anything. It was very square, oh yeah, it was an Econobox. I could pull up to a building, slap on 4x4 low gear, cut the wheel against the wall and climb. I loved that econobox.

This thread is filled with mean posts. Not a very good representation of PC.

I do not view Prius (all packages) as econobox. It's a sophisticated car whether it has all the trim features or not. Now, my experience is with a G3, but in my opinion even G1 Prius was sophisticated technology. I just got my Prius IV in December. I upgraded from a 2001 Toyota Solara. I loved my Solara, but it wasn't sophisticated like my Prius. Higher tech (referring to the standard tech across all models), higher mileage, Eco-friendly, all make the Prius not an econobox.

Aveo doesn't rise to that level.

If you really want to know what an econobox is, then check out the old Chevy Sprint...the grandfather of the Aveo and whatnot. I had a Chevy Sprint thru school...tin can if i ever saw one! Aveo is a Lexus next to the Sprint...all manual, no a/c, nothing but a 3-cylinder engine!
