Well the head is off! With the exception of cylinder 4 being so clean everything looks pretty good to me. Cylinder walls look good, piston tops aren’t real carboned up and valves all appear to be seated good. Surprisingly the EGR cooler was fairly clean, I mean at least I could see through it. So what’s everyone think? Should I just proceed on with a new head gasket? Anything else I should inspect? IMG_9253.jpeg IMG_9254.jpeg IMG_9255.jpeg IMG_9256.jpeg IMG_9257.jpeg IMG_9258.jpeg

That engine is the poster boy for a steamed clean piston with its dirty but healthy brothers standing by.

I would guess your 2014 had a production date of Feb 2014 or later with revised pistons and rings. That alone will keep the egr cooler clear.

Keep its namesake in mind: any amount of carbon is an effective insulator. Cleaning tips in top two links in my signature (on a phone turn it landscape to see signatures). If Oxi-clean soaks are cutting it, consider lye solution, just on the cooler. Use caution handling the stuff though.

and of course deal with the rest, including the intake manifold with its EGR passages.

carbon happens, regardless of your piston ring variety.

Thanks Mendel, I’ll check out your magic cleaning procedure! At least my cooler isn’t as gunked up as many I’ve seen.

I haven’t tried lye solution myself yet, but would wager it’s just up the street from oven cleaner, albeit stronger. Crystal lye (sodium hydroxide) is readily available through Amazon.ca, but not so much on Amazon.com. It’s essential ingredient in soap making, and apparently also for methamphetamine production, which is the likely reason for its US scarcity. It also used to be a common grocery or hardware store item, but not of late.

Well, I have access to sodium hydroxide at work! Perks of working at a power plant with onsite water treatment.

Yeah I'm thinking to try that next time. Let me know if yours starts smoking...

Seriously, I think you should be ok. Toyota at least had the sense to make that thing from stainless steel.

Did you also read this one in the Toyotatech section.

"sometimes what they don't tell ya about the process as explained in the manual (ie: 4amps to 60% SOC)
can result in, yes you guessed it !

Not that there's anything inherently wrong with the process, if a busy shop that only needs to get the ICE on.

The charger in the article we read doesn't appear on the manufactures web site any more.
They may still stock them, but with the data logger for a laptop and consulting service of the logs I'm pretty sure if they do still have them they're not gonna be cheap.

Back at it again today! Had to go buy a feeler gauge….you know when you own 3 and can’t find any of them! Well, I don’t think these numbers are great. .006 gap in the center 2 cylinders of the head. .009 gap in the center 2 cylinders on the block. And, look at close up of the edge of cylinder 4, all the other pistons are basically flush with the edge of block, while 4 has a noticeable gap. There’s also an area on cylinder 4 on the head that has an area that’s worn away close to gasket area. Would love some honest opinions. If it was my car, I would not take the chance to rebuild the engine. I would replace it.

The cylinder head at cylinder 4 does not look good. I would replace the head if you decide to rebuild the engine.

Cylinder 4 did not look good on your dowel test earlier. Plus I have never seen a piston so steam cleaned. Must have been leaking for quite some time.

Make sure it's jdm and not a US salvage. I would also want a guarantee of 30-90 days at least. Some shops will guarantee the labor as well.

Any tips on telling a JDM from a salvage?

JDM, based on what I see so far.....
Looks like you will be able to install it yourself.

A GOOD machine shop can repair the missing parts of the head.
Then machine straight. But, you can only remove a very small amount of material.
Are you 100% certain the straight edge is straight? Looks like something for marking wood.
I just can’t think of the name right now.

JDM Engine in a US Prius? | PriusChat

Look for X2ZR-W20 on the engine instead of the US engine’s X2ZR-W25. The injectors should be tan rather than blue.

Thank you sir! That’s the kind of information I need! I may be headed to Orlando tomorrow morning to have a look at some JDM’s.

Well Saturday I made a 2.5 hour trip to JDM Orlando and picked up a new engine! It was unreal how many engines were in that place! Tough to choose one, just picked one that looked so clean you could eat off of it. Trying to decide what parts I should replace on it before installing, if I even need to?
