I belong to Geico. You got to know how to work there system. They give discounts for professional groups. Just google it and pick the ones you associate with. Call them and say I belong to the Engineers group. They add discounts for for garaging a car or having an active car alarm. They discount for loyality Just call and ask
Obviously, the coverage limits will also determine your premiums. I forgot my coverage, but I know I increased them as much as I reasonably could handle. My reasoning is that I own a condo. If I end up injuring somebody, I would like to reasonably protect the equity in my condo. If I kill somebody, I'll be in big trouble anyway, so I can't protect myself 100%. If I was a renter or had no major assets, I'd just get the minimum coverage. Mike
I talked to a few Insurance guys and was not impressed. They try and sell you car insurance, homeowners insurance, life insurance, Long term care insurance, annuities, investments, IRA's, foreign country medical evacuation insurance, travel agents, car registration services. Geico is easy, they are cheap, reliable, good customer service, and I never had a problem with them, and they are not trying to make me broke with stuff they are not good at.
well, apparently Geico isnt cheap anymore OR there are many other company that are cheaper than Geico. The reason why Geico was known as cheapest auto insurance was that they do not have satellite offices like other companies do. I dont know how much you pay to Geico, but Im sure you can get better rate from Progressive even. SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 ? 2
Yep. Those sound like really low coverage amounts. Do you have little or no assets? You need to be concerned about crazy people suing you in the event of an accident and going after your assets. There's no way I'd have coverage amounts that low. Re: the deductible, that's up to you. One problem of having low deductibles and reporting damage to the insurance company that they end up paying for is that your rates might go up and cost more in the long run. With some folks, if they sustain damage that's their fault, they just eat the cost instead of the reporting it to insurance.
But will Progressive be there when you need them most? Matt Fisher Outraged By Progressive Insurance Defending Sister's Killer (2nd UPDATE)
One thing to consider now days is a lot of companies offer a new customer discount or they may call it a transfer discount for switching to them. When your policy renews, the discount goes away and your rate goes WAY up. So if you're shopping around don't forget to ask about that. There are definite advantages for staying with one company. They will usually make exceptions based on your tenure with them, and if you have an accident and you've been with them awhile (5 years) your rates don't go up (at least that's the way it works with Geico). You can also get other perks for being loyal. It's isn't always the smartest idea to shop every term and go with who ever is the cheapest. The cheapest isn't always the best, you get what you pay for...
well i think thats reasonable price for me regarding my driving behavior.. no one knows what will happen but since I realized Geico is pretty good at ripping people when other company even allstate & state farm offers you lower rate on same coverage, im satisfied. im happy that I found cheaper insurance company... for now. SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 ? 2
I'm glad you're happy and I hope it works out for you. But you are completely wrong when you say Geico is ripping people off. They are the fastest growing auto insurance company in the United States, so obviously they are doing something right. No company is always going to be the lowest price for every driver in every situation.
It's a teaser rate. Similar to the Cable TV promotion. First year is cheap Than Bam you get a significant increase. Tim did an excellent job explaining
Perhaps rating a car insurance company on consumer satisfaction after an accident is the most important criteria. That is when they need to perform for you. Geico ranked 1 by Kanbay GEICO | GEICO Honors and Ratings
Ok since you sound like loyal to geico, explain my situation. Hyundai sonata 2.0t with geico = $105 Toyota Prius with Geico = $155 (that with changed adress from FL to CA) Called Geico customer service. They said because new car is more expensive than my previous car. well Prius IS cheaper. I told them. and they told me CA is known state for higher insurance rate than most of other states. I told them "but $50 above my previous rate is unacceptable" they told me to get a quote from other company and they would tell me the same. and bam! here I am with half the rate and SAME coverages. who wins now? SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 ? 2
and geico may be the fastest growing company but look for bad comments online. I guess its pretty hard to get claim done with this company or just having people thinking that they are the cheapest. tv commercial did good I guess. they are not cheapest anymore. its history. SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 ? 2
I know nothing about your Sonata, but your Sonata likely was old and had less VALUE left than your Prius. That's part of what goes into determining cost. As for CA being known for higher insurance, that's right. IIRC, when I moved from WA back to CA, my insurance doubled in price. Ask the other company if insurance is less in your previous state. I bet it would be.
Your moving to Carson, CA? It is among the highest grand theft auto crime rates in the city. Suggestion move to Redondo Beach or Huntington Beach Carson Crime - Mapping L.A. - Los Angeles Times
My sonata was about $3000 more than Prius when I bought it. Now, every time my new policy starts, thwy raise the rate up about $5-6. Hardly noticeable. Yes. Im sure not too many people bother calling Geico asking why the rate went up. thats their strategy. It is smarter to switch your insurance company every year to get lower rate. what is the benefit by staying with one single company for many years? Im surprised that many people just stay with one company because they dont want any hassle to shop around for better rate when they can save up to $100 a month with same coverages. SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 ? 2
You're comparing apples to oranges Staying with on company you get a loyalty discount. IF you have an accident your rates don't go up and you do't get dropped
Re: the Sonata, that doesn't necessarily matter. Hyundai's traditionally don't hold their value very well. Your Hyundai is probably older than your Prius and worth less $. As for the latter... I admit it, I'm lazy to shop around. The last time I did via calling around (long ago) and via insweb.com, every single insurance company was MUCH higher than Safeco (what I have). You end up getting a lot of junk mail and phone calls from insurance companies after getting a quote via insweb.
