Overpopulation is definitely a problem, but birth control might be an easier sell. Abstinence isn't in the genes.

sorry this is not science, call it what you want but it isn't science. Discovery belongs to the court of law, science is ruled by Scientific Method. If someone has difficulty delineating they are the failure as scientists.

I'm missing your point  so not sure if you're going against me or agreeing with me :D. Blame English not being my first language...

In general I'll say that expecting a certain outcome is not bad perse, but you should be able to cope with an outcome that is not favorable or expected and maintain as objective as the, by nature, subjective human can be.
Some very good advances in quantum mechanics, chemistry, medicine, etc. were arrived at through this...

Um...so the veracity of climate (I'd rather say earth system) science is to be determined...how?

    Entertainment value? video production value?

The concordance of so many lines of evidence about directional climate change and biotic responses to that? Means nothing? Because the people who study it do not also know how to sing & dance?

Youse guys are baffling me. No, really I mean it. You think we have abundant time to play about all this?

((Downer alert --- don't read further if you are mentally unstable))

We are all gonna die. But the notion of being gleefully lazy now, and thereby to cause our successors to die sooner and less comfortably, strikes me as pure evil.

A sort of evil that our predecessors, lacking the leverage of fossil fuel CO2 release, could never have achieved. Or even aspired to.

So, we are ranking videos here now? I slap you all as a group. Shut up. Do something.

    Something.

Pretty much sums it up for me. Just look at the maps of projected drought. If those projections are anywhere even close to the ballpark, there isn't going to be a USA in the year 2100. With everything that the resulting breakdown of civil order entails. To me, on the humor scale, this ranks right up there with jokes about Jews and ovens. But to each his own.

My church has several buildings, numerous HVAC power plants, 14+ programmable thermostats, and zero policy regarding thermostat settings. Thermostats are set at whatever seemed like a good idea at the time/whatever the last person to fiddle with them wanted and/or the factory setting.

I've tried reason and logic, to get them to see how dumb it is to take a space used for a few hours a week, and heat and cool it 24/7/365. And the counter-argument always seems to boil down to, somebody sometime might be uncomfortable if we didn't do that. Pretty much American climate change policy in a nutshell.

I get another shot to argue about this next month. I think I'm going to abandon logic, and just talk about how evil it is. To bring down these consequences on the next generations, in perpetuity, just so we can be extra-comfortable right now. Evil is exactly the right word for it, and might resonate with the church board in a way that neither logic nor economics has. I'll bet I at least get their attention.

Anyway, thanks. I'm sure you'll get a lot of grief for using the e-word here. But you nailed it. And I'm going to see if I can use it to good effect.

It's a church. Stop trying to use logic and tell them that God told you to adjust the thermostats.

I look at this from another point of view.

Watergate was a conspiracy, look how badly it 'leaked' information.
Scientology is a hoax, look how badly it 'leaks' ex-disciples who want to come clean.

Why are there no large scale leaks and defectors from the 'hoax' of Global Warming?

While the entertainment and production values of that video might be below par, the real point is that rarely those who attack the science behind Climate Change are real scientists. As a matter of fact, there is a sinister campaign under way to refute global warming by introducing counter arguments (using bad science, of course) into American classrooms in ways similar to the Intelligent Design debate.

Like the dinosaurs and Neanderthals say, s**t happens.

We have studies that let us know breathing air you can see is bad for you after that's already been determined in earlier studies but "we have to spend our budget" so let's do this study again? One guy received 100k to study World of Warcraft.

For GW, the period of time we're talking about that's blamed on humans is a fraction of a second in history. After all of the studies and science it seems we're still in the assumption mode for GW? Wonder if we were blaming ourselves for the drought that produced Grapes of Wrath or was it just another cycle?

But just in case, since no one knows for SURE, got the Prius, have the squint producing fluorescents and fill the recycle bin when possible. We live a few miles from the coast now and I don't want to be guilt ridden if it turns into an ocean view........blue water view is good for property value though.

OP was a joke. My response to you was true, but made in the same matter. I assumed your video was a joke too. Do we really need smileys on a joke thread:D Anyone looking at the first graph thinking, hmm I need to defend climate science is too tightly wound. Anyone watching these angry gansta scientists and thinking the video is not meant to be funny doesn't get it.

BTW, my production values are lower. The last short I made did get shown in a theater, but we did no real writing, no lights, driven to sets, and cheap hand held video camera:cool: Well, maybe not lower, we were going for a look and had no money.

dude. that sh&t was totally edited out of that documetary the flintsones.:D

Yep. It was partially blamed on agriculture policy. Blame came later, but at least we have changed some of those policies:rockon:

Speaking of Ag policy, stop paying people to not grow stuff. I sold a Motorhome to a farmer who seemed to get a kick out buying stuff with tax dollars received for not working.

I think y'all are right. There should be a place (here at least) where we all out to relax about these perceived crises and laugh a little.

Caught me at a grumpy moment, is all.

Meanwhile, if any remain that found fault with IPCC supporting the Amazon forest dieback with gray literature (which they did), I expect that you will be interested to read a review just out, touching on the subject in a rather complete context.

    Free to download here:

Woods Hole Research Center Press Releases

It does suggest that Amazonia is a bit fragile in context of climate. Yavinder Malhi recently reported the opposite for the African rain forests. Let's be happy about that at least. It was a presentation at a meeting (that I did not attend), but Malhi is a pretty dedicated guy and surely he will get a publication on it soon.

If anybody is interested in joining the Malhi fan club (along with me) read this article

The allocation of ecosystem net primary productivity in tropical forests
    Phil. Trans. R. Soc. B (2011) 366, 3225–3245

and I think you'll see he is an excellent practioner of earth system science.

Finally, I never disputed the hypothesis linking pirates and climate change. Mechanism seems a bit vague, but I'll try to keep an open mind :)

shouldn't be bad as long as they give equal time to flying spaghetti monster
This is actually easy. The mechanism is pretty straight forward: % of population chooses to be a pirate. Higher population, higher number of pirates. Higher population bigger AGW impact.

David Deutsch's book At the Beginning of Infinity is worth reading if just for the scolding of GW scientists.

All problems are solvable. We have more scientists studying and working on GW than the number of scientists that existed at the start of the 20th century. Come up with a solution and fix the problem. Don't tell us the solution is to revert back to the stone age.
