Is Gen 5 Prius really better-looking than Gen 4 Prius Prime?

Are you talking about the edges of the front end where the fog/driving lights and accent lights are? Are you talking about Gen 4 Prius or Gen 4 Prius Prime? I think Gen 4 Prius Prime front end is beautiful with the fog lights and accent lights. BMW i8 is very similar. Gen 5 Prius does not even have fog/driving lights. I think it is a safety hazard with tiny headlights and no fog/driving lights. People could easily miss it at night. It is also disappointing that they chose not to distinguish Gen 5 Prius Prime from the far cheaper Gen 5 Prius.

there's nothing objective about people on the freeway. the sample is too small and the science is all wrong. who knows how many see you and say to themselves, 'what an ugly car'.

there is nothing objective about looks, it's all subjective.

Too small, like the whole population of Southern California?

I think the Gen 4 Prius had a good shape to it. It was ruined by the headlights, which they fixed for the mid-cycle refresh. But once you're known to be ugly, it's hard to shed the image. And the Prime was better-looking still... but still had the Prius badge.

Even with the 5th gen Prius, the early reviewers were unsure whether to say it was good looking or not. I remember one reviewer would only commit to saying it was better looking. Only after it became clear that the overwhelming consensus was that it was beautiful, reviewers dared say so overtly.

There's an illusionary aspect to the design that makes the car kind of shape shift before your eyes. If you're not close enough to it, you are likely to think it looks like a wedge, or even diminutive. Then as you walk up to it and around, it just kills you with its subtle beauty. It evokes the kind of powerful poise usually reserved for exotic cars. Then you walk away and look at it from afar, and question what you just saw. It's... elusive.

Aesthetics aside, Consumer Reports, NHTSA, and IIHS have not rated Gen 5 Prius yet. It looks like Consumer Reports is having a hard time finding an XLE to buy. It is very risky to buy a car without seeing the Consumer Reports review and the safety ratings. Auto-blog reviews are not very helpful. Hopefully I will get to see all these ratings before my dealer calls me and I have to make a purchasing decision.

Not that risky. Even cars with lousy ratings are selling fast.

Consumer Reports gave the new Sentra the worst score in the small car category based on "predicted reliability" despite it outperforming other small cars in all objective measures. Probably based on the assumption that it's transmission will be problematic like the previous iteration of the car. This despite the transmission having been improved substantially for this generation. I don't think their reports are bullet-proof for anything except the objective measures like 0-60 times, cabin quietness, etc.

I personally don't consider Consumer Reports to be a reliable source of objective information nor helpful in purchase decisions. Predicted reliability is a great example.

So, you believe their road-test score (83/100) but not their predicted-reliability rating (1/5). ;)

In that case, why not base your decision on the road-test score alone?

Back to reliability, when was the last time Nissan built a reliable car? What makes you think that Nissan will suddenly start making a reliable car despite their continual poor reliability across all their models? It is not just the transmission—everything in a Nissan breaks down all the time.

It is the best objective information out there when it comes to car reviews and ratings, generated by comprehensive systematic testing by experienced and knowledgeable engineers and expansive survey.

Hmm... they might actually stand out as the ones without fog lights.

Our last round of cars had them, and they worked okay, but they never seemed necessary.

Neither of our current cars is equipped with them, not a lot of trees jumping in front of us yet. And yes, we live up in the hills where sometimes there is a whole bunch-o-fog.

It hasn't been a big loss- and one fewer thing to worry about.

Gen 4 Prius Prime fog lights are not really fog lights, and I don't expect them to work in the fog. However, I keep them on all the time (with automatic light-on) because they increase the visibility at night tremendously. I expect the visibility of Gen 5 to be very low because of even smaller headlights. I am also worried that the illumination of Gen 5 may be poor. The illumination of Gen 4 Prius Prime is not great but OK.

I have never liked the looks of Gen 4 Prius HEV, but I have always liked the looks of Gen 4 Prius Prime PHEV a lot. And you get the amazing Blue Magnetism color in Gen 4, which is missing in Gen 5. Imagine how that color would have looked with the sportier looks of Gen 5! The Reservoir Blue color is dull.
