My maintenance manual says to "inspect" transmission fluid at 120K.

What is Toyota's idea of "vehicle life" and how does that expectation compare to your idea of reasonable vehicle life?

If you are happy to get 150K miles out of a car, then I agree that you don't have to worry about replacing the transaxle fluid. If you strive to log more trouble-free miles then some preventive maintenance would be justified.

In Minnesota cars last about 200k, then start to die due to rust. Many die before, a few last a bit longer. A WS transmission failure is rare compared to T-IV and Dexron III transmissions of yesteryear, across all Toyota models, but you are correct in saying it isn't going to hurt anything.

'06 manual outside and its raining. not gonna happen.
Haynes manual shows how but not when to change it.

i read my '04 owners manual cover to cover back in '06 when I got it (boring...zzzzz). anyway , the car was dated 11/03, that was 8 years before the tsb. but that car's sold, and the owners manual went with it. maybe they changed the spec?

+ I am starting to get a little senile...

I did the '04 at about 100k; the fluid was nasty looking, black w/ a couple metal bits in it-- not a spoonful like you'd get out of a thm350, or anything that worried me. my brother had it for 2 years and he did it again at about 160k, said it was red and didn't look bad.

I just did a throttle body cleaning in my 2006 with 68,000 miles. I also got some MAF sensor cleaner and removed the sensor and cleaned that. Maybe I got too much of the throttle body cleaner in the intake manifold and its blocking something? I did this about a week and a half ago, and now I'm noticing that when I am accelerating with the engine at around 3,000 RPM, it's like the engine makes a completely different tone and vibration. It's not a shudder, knock, or clunk, it's just a harsher vibration. The only other way I can describe the vibration and tone is to imagine that the exhaust had a tiny leak, but the tone and vibration are only present when the engine is around that 3,000 RPM mark, and goes away when you go to full throttle, or when the engine goes below 3,000 RPM. Could it be that I need to clean the intake?

Do you happen to have a reference for this that "it doesn't need any service for the life of the engine on a gas engine"? The dealer here just told me I need an "intake manifold service" as well...which seems like a scam, but he said they looked into it and saw the build up during a routine inspection (which seems like a dealer scam to me).
