Which oven cleaner? The sodium hydroxide one with the yellow cap (caustic soda: dissolves aluminum), or the one with the blue cap (takes the shine off aluminum but I don't think actually dissolves it)?

Anything caustic will take the shine off aluminum. Oxi is also caustic, just not as much. I wouldn't use either on the aluminum EGR valve body, but they're fine on the stainless steel EGR cooler or pipe.

As you say, it might just be taking the shine off it, but who knows. The valve is relatively easy to clean anyways, with just brake cleaner and a bit of brushing.

This is what I used. It was cheaper and the rear label was almost the same.
It does state: Do NOT use on exterior oven surface, aluminum, chrome, backed enamal.
You can use it on a cold oven. It says spray it on and let it sit for 6 hours. I only waited about 30 minutes for
the cooler. I lost patience decades ago. :)
But 30 minutes worked for ME.
You could try heating the cooler in the oven, and preheat to 200F degrees.
Spray the cooler and pressure wash after 10 minutes. Make sure you wear some type of heat resistant
glove because it WILL be hot! :)
The EGR cooler is stainless steel so it's safe to use it. I wouldn't use it on aluminum. Though I did, on the valve.
It's better if you read the instructions BEFORE using the product, not after. :(
But it did clean it off and didn't pit the valve surface. Maybe because it was only on it for 30 minutes.

As you can tell, there are several ways people have for doing things. Some work for certain things.
I just KNOW this worked for me. If you want to use the ox stuff, maybe use 10 times the amount the say to use.
    Or 20, 30???

We've got a Whirley Pop popcorn pot, spun aluminum manufacture. I've always washed it out by hand. We got our daughter one too, and I guess she just shoots it in the dishwasher. Ours is like-new shiny; hers has a dull grey mat finish. Still works though.

First you said you have no other issue, now you say you have an oil consumption issue.

If your engine’s burning oil because of worn piston rings, then all of this work won’t help. Then again, worn rings probably aren’t causing the stuttering you’re referring to. What’s the rate of oil consumption?

You might want to use an OBD reader and see if the car’s computer is giving any codes, such as cylinder misfire.

By then, you’d have to go out and buy more cans and it would cost more than buying new a manifold replacement
