If you bump into something, the C-type is about as expensive to fix as any other hatch. If something bumps into YOU, things can change very quickly, since there additional (hybrid) components that have to be paid off in a hull-loss incident.
Insurance companies cover the whole car, not just the front bumper.
They also take into consideration things like NTSB safety ratings, and where you live. In some places, car insurance companies use credit scores to help determine risk (a practice that I think is probably wise looking at risk from their side of the desk.)
If you live in Massachusetts, Hawaii, or California, the practice has been banned so they just charge everybody a slightly higher rate. There's no such thing as an insurance company that loses money.......otherwise they don't get to be an insurance company.
Also, there's really no such thing as an "at-fault" accident. If you file a claim (uninsured motorist, tree falling on your car, alien abduction, etc....) then you're a higher risk. It's not necessarily "fair", but the insurance company's job is to pay as little as possible to maximize profits for their investors.

If you're eligible I also highly recommend USAA, as the others have before me.
They're an insurance company, but they're a very highly rated insurance company. I also recommend that you raise your deductibles as high as possible. Too many people carry low deductibles and call the insurance companies for relatively insignificant claims, which can result in higher than necessary rates.

    Good luck!

Thanks ETC for the thoughtful response. Now that you mentioned it, I did have a windshield rock chip right before they raised my rates and did report it to Mercuty, although I didn't go through with the claim because it was less than my deductible. And I did have someone rear-end me a couple months before that. It was a minor thing, basically her license place screws left an impression on my rear bumper, but her insurance paid for the damage. I read or heard someone that Mercury would not raise your rates if you have damage or are in an accident that wasn't your fault, but maybe that's a myth. They don't tell us anything. The good ole "mushroom" policy: Keep'em in the dark covered with you know what.

I'll call USAA to see what they can do. I happen to have their MasterCard, the only credit card I carry, so let's see if that qualifies me.

    Thanks again.

I've been with USAA for 22 years and can tell you that much more goes into an insurance company than the premium. I've only had a few claims in 22years and they have always done right by me. My friends with other insurance companies always seem to have bad claim stories. If you qualify for USAA I highly recommend it.

Hey Prius Bros! I paid 115/month for comprehensive through State Farm auto insurance in Las Vegas but moving to Wiscansin it got bumped up to $130/mon and that is after removing homeowners insurance! I do not know why so expensive but certainly now looking for cheaper comprehensive insurance!!

I have all state I've been using them for 10 years. I never had anything bad with them this whole time. I'm currently paying for my c $65 a month with towing for full coverage. Seems to be the cheapest I had when I tried other insurance companies.

I have Mercury. However I had an accident last year that totaled my old car. My rates went up regardless, so I didn't notice if the Prius C increased it. But I did shop around other companies and they're all still going to be more expensive for me versus Mercury, so I'm sticking with them for now. I guess it just depends? I didn't realize that the Prius and hybrids would raise rates tbh.

Our Mercury rates went up again, so I was thinking about shopping around too. Good to know ahead of time that Mercury is already priced competitively.

State Farm. My Prius C2 insurance is about the same as my other two cars...one of which has an MSRP ~10x the cost of the Prius...other is over 5x. I was shocked how expensive coverage for this car is given its low price.

Hey me too except I just own the Prius C but anyway, is State Farm the cheapest insurance you found? Not having much luck finding cheaper here in the Midwest (Wiscansin)

I think I'm thoroughly convinced of steering clear from the Prius C. I recently requested quotes for the Prius and Prius C from the same year, and the Prius was considerably cheaper. It is bad enough insurance is already so high where I'm from...

In my part of California, my insurance went up by $78 the six month period. So, $13 per month increase.
